Joe Biden's Inauguration Puts His Popularity Into Question

By LateToTheParty | Late to the Pol | 21 Jan 2021

On January 20, 2021, Joe Biden officially became the 46th President of the United States. This came off of an unprecedented general election performance where he received 80 million votes, the most a presidential candidate has ever gotten. However, there have been many doubts on whether the results were legitimate with allegations of voter fraud. Depending on what poll you are looking at, somewhere between 70% to 77% of Republicans think the election was not free and fair. A Rasmussen poll had 30% of Democrats believing that the election was very likely or somewhat likely stolen from Donald Trump.

I did not bother watching Biden's inauguration, but a friend of mine shared with me something interesting later that day. Apparently, The White House YouTube channel unlisted the livestream of his inauguration (archived version). Out of curiosity, I asked him to show me and indeed the video was unlisted. But that was not the part that intrigued me; it was the like-to-dislike ratio. At the time I checked, the livestream had 3.8K likes to 18K dislikes. Currently, the video has 4.1K likes to a whopping 31K dislikes. I looked at the other videos posted in The White House channel and they, too, had similar ratios.

Whether the livestream was always planned to go unlisted or whether it got unlisted because of its negative reception, I don't know. Regardless, assuming that those dislikes are genuine and not driven by bots, this is pretty damning. I was able to find Donald Trump's inauguration video and while it did not have the most stellar ratio, it had more likes than dislikes. That was in spite of the fact that 90% of news coverage on Trump was negative. And that's not all. Apparently, when Biden's motorcade passed by, a lot of the guardsmen had their backs turned to him (archive version):
