FROM CRYPTO TO CURRICULUM: SHOULD SCHOOLS TEACH DEFI?

DeFi which stands for decentralized finance is a movement that aims at the elimination of traditional finances thereby creating tools that replace them. One of this main tools include cryptocurrency or in short; crypto. This came into existence when an anonymous figure known as Satoshi Nakamoto cashed out a P-2-P white paper which led into the creation of the first ever cryptocurrency called BITCOIN(BTC).Since then, many coins and token followed such as Ethereum(ETH), Solana(SOL), and many more. According to coin market cap only 20-50 cryptocurrencies have` potential in 2025.

Now to the main topic, should schools and universities take DeFi as a subject or course? Come to think about it cryptocurrency or DEFI has a lot of potential that would be beneficial to the coming generation; gen alpha due to the stress and corruption in traditional means of finance. Some of these reasons may include cryptocurrency being decentralized; meaning that cryptocurrency has no governing body or headquarters and it is run by a blockchain.

However DeFi being taught in schools may come with its phase of challenges which eventually may pass away after sometime. Some of this challenges may include;

1️⃣ Lack of important infrastructure in schools and universities

Due to lack of infrastructure in schools most especially in underdeveloped continents it may be a challenge to teach DEFI because of poor internet connection, lack of adequate computers and un-conducive environments that all play a role in facilitating learning.

2️⃣ Inadequate awareness of cryptocurrency

Cryptocurrency in Africa is just upcoming and so because of its juvenility most people in Africa have rarely heard of it. Research shows that only 50–60% of Africa's population know the word cryptocurrency say less of knowing what it really is and how to use it. It is estimated that 10 years would have passed before most Africans come to know of cryptocurrency and use it.

These are just two of the countless reasons why cryptocurrency can't be converted into a subject or a course in universities and schools. However in the next 20–30 years it is said that crypto will conveniently be used all over the world and would have yanked away all ounce of traditional finance all over the world and yes even in Africa.
