The Tale of Satoshi Nakamoto

unknown man - WGRD

Satoshi Nakamoto is the pseudonymous author that published the Bitcoin whitepaper back in 2008.  The paper is entitled Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System.  Although Satoshi didn't invent the blockchain, they did create the first decentralized currency based solely upon blockchain technology.

The mysterious name was being used in email communications and forum posts prior to Bitcoin officially being launched in 2009.  For some reason, in 2011, all of their communications to the world began to dry up.  Satoshi appeared to just vanish off the face of the Earth.  The mystery around the creation of Bitcoin continues to be one of the hottest debates and accusations in the crypto world to date... but who is Satoshi Nakamoto?

Is Satoshi Nakamoto one single person?  A group of people?  We have very little evidence to prove either one, and the mystery continues to be investigated to this day.  The prevailing sentiment is that they are one individual, but others are beginning to jump on board with the idea that it's a team of computer scientists, cryptography experts, and cypherpunks.  Before disappearing off the Earth (or so we think) in April 2011, Satoshi claimed to be a Japanese male born on April 5, 1975.

People observed that Satoshi's command of English was so high and intelligent that they believed it was likely they were from a native-English speaking country.  People also took note that most of the communications from Satoshi mostly occurred between business hours in Europe, also speculating that they didn't live in Japan.  Now that communication has ceased, the world is using their imagination to figure out the true identity of the Bitcoin mastermind.  Individuals and groups of people have been labeled to be the true Satoshi Nakamoto, but only a handful of candidates chosen are notable.

Hal Finney - Wikipedia

Hal Finney is one of the most likely candidates rumored to be Satoshi Nakamoto.  As a very early user of Bitcoin, he is recorded to be the recipient of the very first Bitcoin transaction.  He worked as a software developer and was one of the original cypherpunks back in the 1990s.  Finney passed away in 2014 after suffering from a nerve disease that left him paralyzed prior to his death.  Whenever asked, he would always deny that he was Satoshi Nakamoto.

Nick Szabo - Bitcoin News

Nick Szabo is another highly likely candidate to be Satoshi Nakamoto.  He is a famous computer scientist who created a digital currency called "bit gold" years before Bitcoin.  Amongst the cypherpunk community as well, his communications overlapped strongly with Satoshi's with his writing mannerisms and communication times.  The strong parallels between Nick and Satoshi make many individuals in the crypto community unconvinced when he denies being the creator of Bitcoin.

Dorian Nakamoto - theverge.com

Dorian Nakamoto is a Japanese-American man whose birth name is actually Satoshi Nakamoto.  He is a computer engineer for technology and financial service companies and lived in the same area of California as Hal Finney for over a decade.  He has admitted to having been involved in the development of Bitcoin, but then later retracted his claim stating that he "misunderstood the question".  Ever since then, he's denied ever being a part of the Bitcoin project and didn't even know it existed until the media surrounded him in a frenzy.

Whoever Satoshi Nakamoto is, they are indeed very wealthy.  Forensic technologists have actually tracked down where Satoshi has stored their Bitcoin, putting their net worth around 1 million Bitcoin, roughly $36 billion at the time of writing this article.  The estimates of how much Bitcoin Satoshi owns varies, but most people agree that they hold around 1 billion Bitcoin and has never spent a single one.  This would make Satoshi one of the wealthiest billionaires on the planet!

We still don't know who they really are... whether it be a single person or a group of people.  They could be alive or dead!  Without solid concrete evidence, we will never know who Satoshi Nakamoto really is.  Is it you?
