As I am sure many of you have now seen or heard Coinbase took the stand to be apolitical or to not be interested/involved with politics. I was initially surprised to see a company and a tech company to take a stand like this. In these times it seems more and more companies are becoming both socially and to a point politically active. Coinbase has been given a ton of flake for this however people are missing the much much larger picture.
I grew up in a family that both sides (my mom and dad's sides) owned and operated businesses. Politics and the workplace was something I grew up learning and understanding was not a good thing to mix. Mixing these two caused unnecessary conflict and hurt productivity. It never mattered the department or job people got hurt or offended and as a result the company was hurt due to the productivity hit.
These times we live in are brutal with every side attacking and demonizing each other. I joked with my dad about the idea of agreeing to disagree and how that must sound like a fairy tale to those growing up right now. Gone are the days of politicians being liberal republicans and conservative democrats and its really unfortunate we lost these views in office. It is not like regular people stopped believing like this because a ton still do but to be elected you had to properly align yourself to fit the mold. This just leaves more and more people feeling unrepresented in the government and put off by politicians.
Coinbase is in an emerging industry with lots of confusion over rules and regulations. This does not bode well for creating any enemies in any level of government as they could disrupt the whole system. The only way for Coinbase to come out of this in a decent shape was to take a stance like this. The employees that decided to leave still left with incredible packages and were not just cut off and kicked to the curb. The packages give people that have chosen this route a lot of time to find a new job as they were providing things like health care for 3-6 months depending on the amount of time they worked for Coinbase. Which are just fantastic packages when faced with the other option of being fired for not following company policy.
Not all companies can or need to be politically active and while some can cause a ton of good others in new industries or new companies cannot afford to cause issue with the status quo. Politics and work..... it is just something that does not mix well and while it can be perfectly fine and cause no issues the underlying ability of it to cause irreparable damage is huge. This is damage that can be avoided that can be prevented and Coinbase took the stance to make sure that it would not be an issue.
