The Democratic Republic of Congo: Land of Riches and Broken Silences

From Leopold II to the Cobalt Rush: How a Plundered Nation Continues to Pay the Price of Technological Progress.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is both an abundance and a mystery to the world: immense natural resources under a sky that rarely brings economic peace to those who live there. Tracing the thread of modern plunder inevitably leads to a name from the past: Leopold II. At the end of the 19th century, the Congo was turned into the private state of the Belgian king; what followed was a brutal extraction system that left scars—both human and environmental—that are still felt today.

This legacy of extractive violence did not end with formal colonialism. It has mutated. The global economy demands minerals—including cobalt—to fuel the energy transition: batteries for phones, laptops, and electric vehicles. But while devices shine in showcases and urban hands, the human and ecological cost in eastern Congo remains high. Informal and industrial mines operate amid corruption, armed actors, and a lack of sustainable economic alternatives for local communities.

What does this mean in practice? It means families dependent on artisanal mining to survive, children helping in dangerous mines, rivers contaminated by effluents, and soils losing fertility. It means that income often does not reach equitably: large profits are captured by intermediaries and external actors, while the local population suffers environmental degradation and insecurity.

Why does public opinion not burn with the same intensity as in other crises? Part of the answer lies in distance: end consumers rarely find a direct connection between the phone in their hand and the struggle for water access or territorial control in Kivu. Part lies in the complexity of modern supply chains, which, hidden and fragmented, make tracing responsibility difficult. And part lies in information fatigue: there are so many crises and conflicts that many eyes focus on the immediate.

However, silence is not an option. The demand for cobalt will not disappear tomorrow; therefore, it is urgent to push for solutions that reduce harm and increase accountability. Some possible paths include:

- Transparency in the supply chain: companies buying minerals must demand traceability and independent audits.

- Supporting credible certifications and responsible mining projects involving local communities.

- Strengthening local economic initiatives that offer alternatives to artisanal mining as the sole source of income.

- Political and international pressure so that mineral-receiving governments do not allow practices that violate human rights.

- Informed consumers: reducing device obsolescence, choosing brands committed to traceability, and pressuring through purchase and boycott.

There are also stories of resilience and local organization: mining cooperatives trying to manage resources more fairly, local NGOs working for medical and educational assistance, journalists and activists risking their lives so the world can see. These voices matter and deserve our support.

I want to be one more voice reminding that technological progress should not be written on the backs of forgotten people. It is not about demonizing batteries or stopping innovation, but demanding that innovation be consistent with human dignity and environmental sustainability.

If there is a common thread, it is this: the history of Congo teaches us that without economic justice and limits to extractive greed, mineral wealth becomes a curse. And it challenges us all: governments, companies, and consumers. The urgent question is simple: will we consume ignoring the human cost, or will we demand a decent and transparent supply chain?
