The top news of the day about cryptocurrencies (07-09-21)

A quick recap of the most important events surrounding cryptocurrencies today:

  • September 7, 2021 will go down in history as the first day in history when a station nation adopted Bitcoin as legal tender. The measure has seen a lot of criticism, and opposition from other countries, financial institutions, and a portion of the population. Some claimed that its approval and implementation occurred too fast. Others argued that in Latin America things must be done quickly or they risk not being done at all. At the moment, events seem to favor those who think the latter as Bitcoin users from around the world have gone to verify the implementation of this historic law.

  • Bitcoin (BTC) fell 19% today from the peak at $53,000 to the low at $42,800. Most of the major altcoins saw drastic declines today, usually larger than Bitcoin. The only altcoin that seems unconcerned about the market tumble is Solana (SOL) Solana opened the day at $164, recorded a brief bottom at $128 to trade at $173 at the press time. Total cryptocurrency market capitalization fell by more than 14% today.

  • Coinbase, Kraken, and Gemini reported issues this morning as token prices fell across the board. Coinbase was among the first exchanges to report degraded performance. The exchange's support team suggested that the outage was due to a “sudden increase in network traffic and market activity” and said that “funds may delayed and transactions may be canceled” Coinciding with the outages, the cryptocurrency market saw prices decline for almost all major assets. The incident was either the cause or result of massive sell-offs, as several cryptocurrencies went into the red.

  • Fetch.ai (FET) is a protocol focused on building an open access, tokenized-based decentralized machine learning network that aims to support the smart infrastructure being built around the digital economy. The price of FET spiked 70% to a new record high at $1.12 on Sep. 7 as its 24-hour trading volume surged 538% to $590 million. The rapid increase in price and trading volume comes as the project tests a new multi-modal transport application called Deep Parking.

  • Hyperithm, an asset brokerage firm in South Korea, became the first of its kind to receive an Information Security Management System (ISMS) certification. The certification is a requirement for all crypto-related businesses in the country to acquire within this month. It was mandated by the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of Korea in March this year as a prerequisite for license authorization, with a 24 September deadline. It is proof that a business has undertaken appropriate measures with respect to information protection.

  • Anonymous hackers have reportedly undermined a Russian government website in order to launch a Bitcoin (BTC) giveaway scam. The malicious actors targeted a website that belongs to local government officials in the Russian city of Ryazan. The hackers initially claimed to offer $1,300 to every visitor who installed a particular application on their device. The offering was then revised, stating $1000 in BTC would be given away to five randomly chosen people. Africa is leading the world in illicit crypto activity, followed by Eastern Europe, where Russia is located.
