There are two types of dunes - mobile and fixed. Mobile dunes are covered only by weak vegetation. Every day the wind picks up their waves again, and during the year the dunes move in the direction of the wind from a few centimeters to a few meters. You will find the largest mobile dunes in Lithuania on the Curonian Spit. These are just over 50 meters high Parnidis, Urbo and Great Dunes. The mobile dunes are now pleasing to the eyes of Lithuanian and foreign tourists, but once posed a serious threat to the coastal population. Many stories have survived about the villages buried in the dunes. One of them is the village of Naglio, which was flooded by the wind-driven dune of Agila one and a half hundred years ago. Seven generations of the population tried to stop the sand sliding on the huts, but in vain - the sand soon flooded the streets again and flooded the huts. Eventually, residents began to retreat with all the buildings. For two hundred years the village migrated - the inhabitants moved further and further a few kilometers until they finally stopped fighting against nature and left the territory and settled in other villages - Preila and Pervalka. A similar fate might have awaited these settlements, but people have found a way to "calm down" the rolling dunes. From abroad, the plants were transported with long, widely spread roots and planted with dunes. These dune reinforcement works not only ensured that the mobile dunes would no longer lose their villages, but also helped to stop the dunes from sliding down.
