President Nicolas Maduro ordered that all gas stations accept Petro for payment. It turned out that this is not possible yet
The Venezuelan authorities will start selling gasoline to citizens at a rate of 5,000 bolivars or 2.5 cents per liter. Convertible currencies such as the dollar, Euro, bolivars and the national cryptocurrency Petro can be used for payments. However, the only wallet that supports the digital asset, Petro App, is not compatible with the Biopago payment system, through which the fuel is sold, writes Decrypt.
In February, retailers in Venezuela began refusing to accept payments in the national cryptocurrency. According to them, when exchanging digital money for traditional ones, the Central Bank issues a Bolivar at a repeatedly lowered rate. It also became known earlier that the country will sell 4.5 million barrels of oil from PDVSA certified reserves for Petro.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said last fall that the country uses cryptocurrency to circumvent US sanctions. At the same time, the country's Central Bank conducted tests to determine whether digital money, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, could be used for the country's international reserves.
