College Football Playoffs

I know I am writing a sports take on Publish0x and I am in the wrong place for this, but, I don't care. The is the first year of the NCAA expanding the college playoffs in football from four teams to twelve, and while I may be in the minority, I am totally against it.  Most football fans were excited to see the expansion since there is a better chance their team can make it in and there is more football in general to watch.  Not me. It is a waste and hurts the overall brand in my opinion.

First, and this is the most compelling argument in my opinion, four teams are plenty enough to make sure the top two teams are playing for a national championship.  The problem most people had before the recent move to a four team playoff was that you could often make the argument that there  was a third team that was good enough to be playing for a championship, and some years maybe even a fourth team.  The move to a four team playoff solved this problem. While some could argue about who the fourth team in might be, you always had the top deserving teams making it in. If the solid fifth ranked team was left out, that is ok, as the top deserving teams got their chance. (This also opens up the chance that a top player gets hurt in an early playoff game, and leaves the door open for an undeserving team coming out on top.)

Next, the bowls games are rendered useless now. No on cares about teams not in the top twelve and any player with a prayer of making the NFL is going to opt out of their bowl game to make sure they do not get injured.  Not making the top four teams still meant you might be an elite team, but if you don't make the top twelve, you and your bowl game is just a footnote to the season.

Finally, the college football season is already too long, and now a twelve team playoff is added.  A team making the playoffs could play 16 games, almost a full NFL season. I know a lot of these guys are getting paid a lot of money now, but, for those that actually will need a college education and are not going to the NFL, playing way into January is a full time job, it will be hard to graduate with a real degree with that demanding of a season. Plus, with that many games, the chance of injuries for a player is greatly increased. More blown ACLs, more torn achilles, more concussions. Gonna be hard to play in the NFL if you ruin your knee in the fifteenth game of the season.
