This is the San Cristóbal Civic Center. As an iconic landmark of my city, it should have been restored long ago after the devastating fire of December 2006. Yet, to this day, this is how the facade of Tower B still looks.
Today, I am launching this blog, "In Simple Words." My mission is to educate and explore trends, ideologies, religions, and schools of thought. I aim to weigh the countless worlds of human thinking with a critical but constructive eye—moving past romanticized theories to look at the reality dictated by facts. I will try to break it all down, always... in simple words.
Today’s topic begins with a deceptive question: Socialism?
Article 2 of the Venezuelan Constitution states:
"Venezuela is constituted as a Democratic and Social State of Law and Justice, which upholds as superior values [...] life, liberty, justice, equality, solidarity, democracy, social responsibility and, in general, the preeminence of human rights..."
The words are beautiful, aren't they? But I want to analyze the background of a word that defines the direction forced upon our country: Socialism.
In simple words, without opening a dictionary, this should be the most positive word in that text. It should be synonymous with solidarity, love for one's neighbor, human interaction, communication, and respect—a sort of "collectivization of thought."
However, this is where I find its negative connotation: in my view, the collective should never be the primary concept. It must be an extension of individual thought. If it worked that way—as a voluntary agreement between free individuals—I would have no objection. But since socialism in practice does not operate as it "should," that is where my primary critique lies.
Is it possible to build a "we" if the "I" is not respected first?
Don't let this happen to your First World.

This is what happens when we place our freedom in the hands of the State.
