Kilchurn Castle, Loch Awe, Argyll, Scotland

Kilchurn is a stunning ruin of castle on the shores of Loch Awe, in Argyll in Scotland.  It is very popular with photographers as you can catch some stunning views of it with the mountains behind - which I've successfully failed at - as can be seen by the phots below !

The castle is owned by Historic Environment Scotland.  Although a ruin, it is maintained, and you can enter although it can be closed for long periods while they are undertaking maintenance work.  Its free to enter, and has a large car park, although it has no toilets.  There is sometimes a pop-up-shop near it selling art which is really nice.

You can access some of the rooms, although they are all bare, and can get up in the towers, which is nice.  The views out over the loch and the mountains are quite fantastic - so take your camera !

Its about a 15min walk along a flat gravel path from the car park just off the A85.  The walk itself is quite nice, and takes you past a beautiful iron rail bridge which is still in use.

It can be wet underfoot along the path and around the castle, so take that into account.  There are sometimes sheep around, so you would have to keep dogs on a lead.  And there are lots of photo opportunities all the way along the path.

The castle was built around the 1400s and has quite a bit of history, and was a magnificent structure in its day.

Although a ruin, its still very impressive, and quite high, which is not so obvious on approach.  In the photo below you can see the post holes that would have been used to support beams for a floor, along with multiple fire places.

The turrets always make a castle, and Kilchurn is no different.  There is even the remains of one that collapsed into the inner court yard which you can climb on inside the castle !

The architectural features are impressive and it always makes me wonder how they managed to build such a fine structure all those years ago, and especially in places like this, which is quite remote.  I just even wonder how they got all of the stone there - that alone must have been a massive undertaking.

I've visited Kilchurn many times, and will continue to do so in the future.  With its free entry, why wouldnt you ?  Especially if you are taking out a large family or big group.   Plus kids love it - there is lots to run around and jump on, and hide in - with info boards dotted around to tell you about its history.

In summary, its a spectacular castle and well worth the visit if in the area.

If you want to support important buildings, history and heritage in Scotland and the UK, then please consider the following:

Historic Environment Scotland

National Trust for Scotland

For a reasonable annual membership price, both provide access to numerous historic properties across Scotland which are great for days out.  Once you've been a member for more than a year you also got free access to other properties across England, Wales and Northern Ireland (including half price entry during your first year) - so its well worth the investment, plus its all for a good cause.

In my spare time I enjoy visiting castles - being a member of both English Heritage and the National Trust for Scotland gives me year round access to a heck of a lot of them within the British Isles. I'll place the odd post about some of the ones I've visited. The picture used for the blog is Dunstaffnage Castle, which is located on the West Coast of Scotland, in Argyll & Bute, on the edge of the village of Dunbeg - close to Oban.
