The group was founded in 1967 and is one of the most important groups playing progressive rock. At the beginning, the group had a number of personnel changes in 1969. She released her debut album "The Aerosol Gray Machine", which was not very successful. The second album of "The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other" was released a year later and achieved commercial success. The album was re-released in 2005 with two additional songs.

In 1978, the band was dissolved and Peter Hammill continued his solo career, in 2004 the band was reactivated which resulted in the release of the next two-CD album of the group "Present." The group did not gain great popularity in the world but was appreciated by music critics and listeners.
