Blockchain’s Cybersecurity Paradigm Reversal

Blockchain’s Cybersecurity Paradigm Reversal

According to the US Department of Defense, blockchain “reversals the cybersecurity paradigm.” The agency is investigating blockchain because it is “transparently secure” and they distrust the technology.
For them, breaking secrets would be a disaster, so they rely on a cryptographic data structure that makes it extremely difficult to tamper with information while being transparent. It is also considered foolproof:
“In blockchain, trusted nodes reject untrusted nodes. As a result, blockchain networks not only reduce the likelihood of tampering, but also significantly increase the cost of achieving this goal.”
However, the United States is not the only country exploring the potential of blockchain technology in the military sector. Russia and China also appear to be researching blockchain for military purposes, such as national defense and cybersecurity.
• DARPA; is the advanced technology branch of the United States Department of Defense (DoD). The US Department of Defense is considered a key element in the creation of the Internet. Currently, the DoD, in line with its modernization strategy, has begun to study the underlying technology of Bitcoin, namely blockchain, through the DARPA division.

Another example of the use of blockchain in the military sector:
Quoted by “bitcoinist”; Armies around the world are always looking to benefit from the latest technologies available to maintain their competitive edge. One of these innovations is blockchain.
Officials within defense organizations are interested in the anonymity and distributed consensus capabilities of the technology.
NATO is also exploring the applications of blockchain in the field of military procurement. It is also investigating how to combine it with other advanced concepts such as the Internet of Things.
The United States, Russia, and China have so far focused more on how to apply blockchain to military purposes, national defense, and cyber issues than other countries.
The US military has long been interested in blockchain technology. Section 1646 of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2018 requires that blockchain technology be evaluated for military applications.
The Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) recently announced its intention to use blockchain technology to reduce the cost of operating and maintaining aircraft components. In addition, some believe that the US Department of Defense intends to use this technology to manage its assets worth nearly $100 billion.

At the same time as the US, Russian military officials are also researching blockchain applications. For example, in June of this year, it was announced that the country is researching how to use the technology to detect and counter cyber attacks. It was also announced in the past that if Russian cryptographic algorithms can be quickly defined as international blockchain standards, its applications in private organizations, government agencies, and possibly the Russian Ministry of Defense will be visible in the future. The country is also planning to hold elections based on blockchain.

China believes that blockchain is not Bitcoin and is optimistic about blockchain as it tries to destroy the cryptocurrency market.

There are currently few credible sources that link Chinese military officials to blockchain; but some of them mention why the country should pay attention to the technology in question. For example, a 2016 article stated that the use of this technology by the Chinese defense and security authorities has been supported for various tasks. Among the mentioned cases are the information cycle of weapons storage and the improvement of general logistics. Zhu Qichao, director of the National University of Defense Technology and one of the commanders of the Chinese military, is one of the researchers on this topic.

In addition, in another report on how blockchain is used in China, he wrote:

It seems that the secure sources of public opinion will harm the counterintelligence operations of any enemy.

It also specifically mentions public opinion warfare, which is in line with the country’s three other war strategies. The other two are legal and psychological warfare. Accordingly, blockchain seems to be a suitable tool for use in public opinion warfare.

Hyperledger and Chinese military collaborate; increasing blockchain adoption in the Chinese military
Hyperledger, the open source blockchain consortium backed by the Linux Foundation, has given the green light to a Beijing-based company serving the country’s military to join its new licensing program.
Only five companies have been granted the Hyperledger Certified Service Provider (HCSP) license. This license allows the companies to provide support, consulting, training, and professional services such as installation, configuration, and troubleshooting to other companies active in blockchain technologies.
Of the five companies, three are IBM, Accenture and Chainyard in the US, and two are Ant Financial, formerly known as AliPay, and Beijing Peersafe Technology, both based in China.
Four months ago, Peersafe raised funds from the Shanghai Military and Civilian Integration and Development Fund. The funds were invested in dual-use technologies that can be used for civilian and military purposes.
With the injection of capital from the fund, Peersafe embraced the partnership to deepen its relationship with its customers in the agencies.

government and military.
Founded in 2014, Pirsafe is one of the top three blockchain patent companies, with 14 approved patents and 55 pending patents as of June 2019. The company provides infrastructure for blockchain-based platforms across China, including government platforms.
Pirsafe claims to be the only Chinese company to hold all three government-issued licenses. These licenses include a license for commercial crypto products, a license to sell information security products for the Ministry of Public Security, and a software supplier for central government agencies.
However, the company’s presence in the military has not been disclosed.
The new license program has qualified Pirsafe for Hyperledger Fabric, a distributed ledger technology that s considered the foundation for developing applications such as a logistics equipment tracking platform and a secure information system.
