CELESTE BIANCHI - HISTORY OF A LEGEND

By Hob | Heroes on Bike | 12 Jun 2021

The "Fabbrica Italiana Velocipedi di Edoardo Bianchi", known simply as Bianchi, is the oldest bicycle factory in the world still existing (founded in 1885), once also an important Italian car and motorcycle manufacturer.

Since the 20's appears the classic color CELESTE Bianchi on some bicycles. It was and is a unique and unmistakable color, while traveling through space and time. That celeste that accompanied the flights of the Champion Coppi...

That celeste, that color, that you feel you have always known.

Celeste has become synonymous with history and tradition, with passion and victories. But where does this Celeste come from, and what has made this unusual color a symbol?

There are many stories at the origin of the legend. Some more romantic, others decidedly more pragmatic. Perhaps the simplest is that it was nothing more than the color of the sky on a Milan morning, above the Bianchi factory, that inspired the birth of Celeste.

The most romantic people say that Edoardo Bianchi, the company's founder, gave a bicycle to Queen Margherita of Savoya as a gift, and taught her how to use it. Bewitched by the celestial color of her eyes, Edoardo chose to give that color to the frame of his bicycle.

Such was the astonishment and emotion of that gift that - according to the legend - the Queen granted Edward the use of the royal coat of arms, which since then characterizes the frame of every Bianchi bicycle.

But there is also a more concrete version. In a market largely dominated by the color black, Edoardo Bianchi invented an unusual, characteristic and unmistakable color starting with a supply of excess military paint, in shades between light blue and light gray. From this mixture, Bianchi's color was born.

And where does the name "Celeste" come from? From the Latin "Caelestis", which means celestial, heavenly.
