The Secret of the Edge: A Debt Returned (Part 2) After I

Marko is in Sarajevo. His grandfather is on his deathbed and tells him a secret he had been hiding his whole life. The grandfather gives him an old watch and tells him to go to his birthplace in Herzegovina.

Grandfather Jovo: "Marko, my son, be careful because there is no coming back..."

Marko goes to the village and opens his family house, and from the door, he is immediately struck by the smell of dampness. Marko enters, wipes the dust off the table, and finds a photograph. In it is his grandfather's brother Ilija, about whom the grandfather didn't speak much—he would only say: "He died a long time ago." Marko took the photograph, hung it up, and went for a walk.

He met an old lady and said: "Good day." The old lady replied: "Good day," and asked him: "Whose are you?" He said: "I am from the Lazić family, my grandfather is Jovo." Marko asked her: "What happened in this village a long time ago?" The lady rudely replied: "I don't know," and slammed the door. Marko was in shock.

He went on his way and met Old Ivan. The old man called out: "How are you, boy?" and asked whose he was. Marko answered him. Old Ivan invited him into the house and poured a glass of rakija. Everything was fine until Marko asked: "What strange thing happened in this village?" Old Ivan turned pale in the face and just changed the subject.

Marko went further and met a girl named Elena. She told him about the cursed wedding guests and the carriage that flew off the cliff many years ago. Everyone died. Elena said: "That’s what my grandmother told me," and added: "If you want, I can even show you that cliff." Marko said: "Okay." When they reached the cliff, Marko felt a restlessness in his chest and said: "Elena, let’s get out of here and go to my place for a drink."

They left. When Elena went home, Marko sat down, lit a fire, and sat by the stove. He poured a rakija, lit a cigarette, and thought about what Elena had told him. Marko fell asleep, and the next day he went to the cliff alone. He managed to climb down and found that carriage that had crashed. Marko quickly went back to his house, thinking about everything, and lay down to sleep.

He was startled from his sleep around two in the morning by music and singing. Marko found the strength to go outside, put on his coat, and headed toward the music. The music led straight to that cliff. Marko arrived and saw the wedding guests and the carriage. The groom stepped down, approached Marko, and said: "I am Ilija." Marko was frozen to the ground, just silent, saying nothing.

Ilija continued: "Your grandfather, my own brother Jovo, abandoned me. I could have survived because he climbed down the cliff and saw me alive. But he told the people above that no one survived. He was jealous of me since we were young, but especially on the day I came home and said I was marrying my beautiful Kata. He was in love with her, but she wouldn't even look at him. That day he decided to kill me. He was leading the horses and suddenly let them go and struck them. The horses went off the cliff, but the people didn't see it."

Ilija added: "The debt must be returned." Tears were streaming down Marko's face. That night ended tragically. In the morning, Elena went to Marko's house to call him for a walk, but she saw he wasn't there. She went to look for him, and when she reached the cliff, she saw Marko. He was completely pale in the face. He was dead. She went to Old Ivan, who only told her: "The debt is returned."

At the same time, Marko's grandfather Jovo was dying in great agony. A debt always comes due, especially when you turn against your own brother.
