Releasing The 'Self-defense' EP On Blockchain Platforms

By JungleOnion | JungleOnion | 3 Jun 2019

Hey! This is my first post on Narrative and I would like to make it about the release of my EP ‘Self-defense’. I'm currently releasing it in blockchain platforms because I firmly believe in the concept they all have, full transparency, no middleman, full ownership of your data and so on. I've been interested in blockchain technology since 2016 so I've seen platforms come and go but nowadays projects are much more mature than they were before and I love the fact that there's content creation platforms like Narrative and others that bring value to the whole blockchain ecosystem. Currently I'm releasing the EP in Choon, Musicoin and Ujo. I'm also managing to get it in PeerTracks and others but for now give it a listen and enjoy!

Each song has definitely it’s own personality and had trouble describing the genre, maybe you guys can help me out? I would consider some songs to be rock, some others more inclined to synth rock or synthpop, others very experimental but overall they all share the same feeling I was attempting to transmit so that’s why I feel very happy to be able to share it with the world!

A little about the music project and the musician in me:

I’ve always been passionate about music since I was younger and experimented with multiple instruments while growing up. The first instrument I played was guitar and kinda went on and off with it until I became more interested in drums and so I switched for a while to play drums, had a death metal band and we had a couple of shows that were nice. Eventually it didn’t turn out as expected so we split and well, it was a shame because if we could’ve kept going, we would’ve taken the band into a very technical death metal approach which was always my favorite genre when I was growing up. Then decided to try piano because I thought it was a very important instrument to learn how to play and indeed it was! I became interested in synthesizers after learning basics of playing with an electric cheap piano my mom got me for $50 (which I still use for all the music I make hahah) and so I started to step into the realms of music production.

This was a little bit more complicated to grasp at first compared to just playing music and enjoying it. Music production is more technical, and very broad so it becomes overwhelming easily. Luckily I had time enough to practice and learn. My first steps in music production was with electronic music because that’s what I first thought when trying out stuff by myself “I don’t have the expensive equipment to record live instruments so lets play around with my keyboard”. The electronic genre that I enjoyed the most when I was younger, and I still kinda do, is Drum & Bass, heavy basses, punchy drums and chaotic melodies shared the energy I enjoyed when listening to death metal so I became very into attempting to produce music in this genre. I produced drum & bass in 2012 and 2013 but never released anything because I wasn’t that interested in it. I became the drummer of a rock band and ever since I left music production aside.

Last year I decided to start producing again and came up between last year and this year, with some drum and bass songs that I enjoyed making. I’m still not a professional and I’m far from having commercial quality, and electronic music is complicated. Most people would think “ah is just a computer making it, DJ’s just press play”. Which is true, both statements, and while DJ’s just press play, they still give in their flavor by mixing and making the live experience enjoyable, and the computer is kinda like orchestrating the instruments, there’s no humans playing the instruments, but behind the scenes the producers work hard to achieve a great track so I do appreciate all electronic genres because they have their own styles and techniques that make them unique in their own way. But lately I had the awesome opportunity to focus in making music so I took advantage of this and worked on an entirely new concept of what I was working on previously and that’s where this EP falls into place. I attempted to combine the analog side of live music (drums, bass and guitars) with the digital/electronic side of synthesizers in a blend that is interesting to listen and gives each track their own peculiarity and feel. I enjoyed including sharp guitars, smooth and mellow guitars, punchy synthesised trumpets, dreamy and ethereal pads, old school clavinets and strings. but, there’s a big BUT, if you are a lyric lover, I’m afraid to let you know the music I make is instrumental so…sorry about that I’m not a good singer hahaha maybe in the future I will work on developing that skill but if you are interested in interesting instruments, I definitely encourage you to give the EP a listen and let me know your thoughts!
