Aloha, It's me again Chantel, to talk about my life. I have gotten the most biggest culture shock of my life. Now I was born in hawai'i and raised there too. I just previously moved to pennsylvania on June 26, 2018. Talk about culture shock, like wow, no lie. I knew that there would be snow in the winter times, but I did not know it was going to be this cold. I mean like -20 degrees. Totally not use to that. Hawai'i its only 68-74 degrees all year around, the only snow you ever see is on the two mountain tops we have called "Mauna kea and Mauna Loa", besides opening up your freezer, lols.
Also the heat here is outrageous. I mean talk about hot. 91 degrees +at some times. I am totally not use to that kind of heat at all either, especially when I am use to being able to go right down to the beach if it gets hot. I'm use to speak "Pigeon" its a language spoken throughout the islands, its broken english. I am also to use to calling everyone uncle or aunty,or by nicknames. Aunty or uncle for those that are older in age and out of respect they are called aunty or uncle.
The change of clothes that I have to go threw with the seasons is ridiculous as well. I mean do not get me wrong, I love watching the seasons change and looking at them as well, But winter can just go away , I mean the cold, and the summer heats here in pennsylvania can go away too. I have never had to wear so much clothes, like I have to hear in the winter times, and during the heat times of the seasons, I feel like just going naked , but not even that helps, because I have tried , LOLS.
The foods here are way different than what I am use to. I am use to being able to eat raw fish whenever I wanted. Fruits were of a huge variety and a lot of them as well. The brands of foods in the stores here are also not the same as back in hawai'i. For example the rice is "Hindode" brand back in hawai'i, and here in pennsylvania there are a lot of brands not just 2-3. Soy sauce in hawaii is called "Aloha Shoyu" , not just soy sauce like here in the mainland. I mean there is "Kikkoman" soy sauce like back home hawai'i, but we hardly use it because its very salty. Another thing that is different is the juices here. I am use to the brand "Hawaiian Sun" which is a mixture of all the island fruits and is indeed a juice drink beverage.
I am use to going to fast food places and always having rice with every meal mostly, and here in the mainland its potatoes or mashed potatoes. McDonalds in hawaii is also different we have on our breakfast menus rice, spam, and portuguese sausage breakfast platters, also on the menu at all times of the day is saimin which is called "Top Ramen" here in the mainland. I am also use to eating musubi. Musubis are made of seaweed rapped over spam and rice with furikake, or could also be eggs and spam with rice with furikake, or hot dogs, eggs, and rice with furikake. Hot dogs in hawai'i are also red. Do not ask me why, because as far as I know from when I was little they were always red, and here in the mainland they are only all brown, and in the mainland they do not have portuguese sausage.
Well that is it for now of some of my culture shock experience that I am still going through!
