Rising Above Mediocity - Part1

Rising Above Mediocity - Part1

Here is a question that was asked on musing.io:

"What are the ways to make sure you don't drift into mediocrity"

For me to be able to answer this question would imply that I wasn't mediocre to begin with and I don't think that's the case with me. Thus I can't help but give you this answer in an unorthodox manner.

I have been mediocre for as far as I can remember. I knew it when I was a kid, I knew it when I reached middle school and I knew it when I got into my first fight.

For me, mediocrity has been a lifelong friend and when I make friends then I tend to keep them for life (or at least I try to). For me it has always been a blessing to know not only my strength and weaknesses but also my standing amongst those who I am with.

Don’t get me wrong, my friendship with mediocrity hasn’t been an easy one. I have lashed out and cursed it more than once but somewhere between adolescence and adulthood I befriended it and found a new kind of strength. Over the years I have come to understand that mediocrity will only be a deterrent if I make it one but it can also be my ally if I give it a chance.

My mediocrity has become the source of my inspiration. It allows me to work harder than I could normally have. It pushes me to plan ahead and keep on predicting the next move. My mediocrity keeps me on my toes and provides me the fuel when I am running on empty.

My friend, as I see it the fear of mediocrity is a motivation in itself. But different people have different approaches and mine has been to learn from it by keeping a watchful eye on it.
