Europa League: Juventus Stay Unbeaten, Milan Suffer a Night to Forget
European football rarely offers a neat story in which every result points in the same direction. Matchday three of the 2026/27 Europa League was a good example. Juventus drew 2-2 with Rennes in Turin, recovering from a first-half deficit but failing to complete the comeback. AC Milan, meanwhile, lost 3-0 away to Bournemouth after a difficult opening period and the dismissal of goalkeeper Mike Maignan.
Juventus made the start they wanted. In the fifth minute, Nick Woltemade found Zeki Çelik with a well-timed pass, and the defender finished to put the home side ahead. For a moment, the evening looked set to follow a familiar script: an early goal, a controlled performance and another three points.
Woltemade was central to both Juventus goals. His pass created the opening strike, while his penalty restored parity in the second half. That combination matters because it shows two different ways in which an attacker can influence a match: by helping a teammate arrive in the right place and by accepting responsibility when the pressure is on.
Milan’s trip to Bournemouth developed very differently. Justin Kluivert converted a penalty in the eighth minute to give the home side the lead. The visitors had barely settled when the game took another decisive turn: Maignan was sent off in the 27th minute after an incident involving Tyler Adams.
Milan have three points after three matches, following a win and two defeats. Their victory over Salzburg had offered a useful response after the opening loss to Benfica, but the Bournemouth result has brought the pressure back.
The third matchday also strengthened the position of several early contenders. Benfica beat Omonia 4-1, Bayer Leverkusen won 2-0 away to OFI Crete, Ferencváros defeated Torreense 4-1, and Olympiacos edged Sparta Prague 1-0. Alongside Bournemouth, those clubs now have nine points from three matches.

The fourth matchday takes place on 5 November. Juventus travel to AZ Alkmaar, while Milan host Ferencváros. Both fixtures will test how quickly the Italian clubs can respond to different kinds of disappointment.
Juventus leave Matchday Three with a sense of unfinished business. They avoided defeat, but they had to come from behind and could not find the winner in front of their own supporters. Milan leave with a heavier result and more immediate questions after a match in which the red card and penalties changed the contest.
