Champions League Matchday 1: Como Shock Leipzig as Europe’s Giants Make Their Move

Como make a stunning Champions League debut with a 4-1 win over Leipzig as PSG, Bayern and Barcelona also start strongly.

The 2026/27 UEFA Champions League could hardly have asked for a more spectacular opening.
The first matchday of the league phase delivered 69 goals across 18 matches, with dominant victories from several European heavyweights, difficult nights for some traditional contenders and one extraordinary Italian story.
That story belongs to Como.
Playing their first-ever Champions League match, Cesc Fàbregas' side produced a stunning 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia.
It was not simply a historic result. It was a performance that suggested Como are ready to compete rather than simply participate.
For Italy's other representatives, the opening round was much more complicated. Roma earned a valuable 1-1 draw away to Fenerbahçe, while Inter lost 2-1 at Real Madrid and Napoli suffered a narrow 1-0 home defeat against Arsenal.

Como announce themselves in style
Few teams entered Matchday 1 with more curiosity surrounding them than Como.
The Italian club had never previously played in the Champions League. Their first European night at this level was therefore expected to be an emotional occasion, but facing Leipzig made the challenge considerably tougher.
Instead, Como looked comfortable from the beginning.
Martin Baturina opened the scoring in the 15th minute, creating a piece of club history with Como's first Champions League goal.
The hosts continued to play with confidence and attacking intent. Their reward came shortly before half-time when Anastasios Douvikas doubled the lead in the 38th minute.
At 2-0, Como could have become cautious.
They did not.
Assane Diao made it 3-0 in the 54th minute, putting the home side in complete control.
Leipzig responded four minutes later through Maksimović, but Como remained composed.
The final word belonged to Máximo Perrone, who scored in the 90th minute to complete a remarkable 4-1 victory.
The result placed Como fifth in the league-phase standings after Matchday 1, ahead of several clubs with far greater European history.
Martin Baturina was also named UEFA's official Player of the Match.
For a first Champions League appearance, it was almost the perfect script.

Roma take a point in Istanbul
Roma began their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Fenerbahçe in Istanbul.
The Italian side took the lead through Bryan Cristante, but Fenerbahçe responded in the second half and levelled the match.
Roma were forced to defend for long periods and goalkeeper Mile Svilar produced important saves to keep the visitors in contention.
A point away from home is therefore a useful starting position for Gian Piero Gasperini's team.
Roma now face a major challenge in Matchday 2.
On October 14, Real Madrid will visit the Italian capital.
The draw against Fenerbahçe gives Roma something to build on before that heavyweight encounter.

Inter fall at the Bernabéu
Inter had the toughest possible opening assignment: an away match against Real Madrid.
The Spanish giants eventually won 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu.
For Inter, the defeat means starting the league phase without a point, although the competition's eight-match format gives the Nerazzurri plenty of opportunities to recover.
The next challenge comes at home against Club Brugge on October 13.
Inter will need a response, particularly because the league-phase format rewards consistency over eight different opponents rather than performance in a traditional four-team group.

Arsenal edge Napoli
Napoli also suffered a narrow defeat.
Arsenal won 1-0 at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, leaving the Italian side empty-handed after the opening round.
It was a frustrating result because there was little margin between the teams, but Arsenal's victory gives Mikel Arteta's side three important points.
Napoli's next assignment is another demanding one: an away match against Villarreal on October 13.
The Italian club therefore has very little time to dwell on the opening defeat.

PSG make their statement
At the top of the table after Matchday 1 are defending champions Paris Saint-Germain.
PSG opened their campaign with a commanding 6-1 victory over Slovan Bratislava.
Ferran Torres was the star of the night, scoring three times.
The French champions immediately sent a message to the rest of Europe: their title defence has started with maximum points and a huge goal difference.
Bayern Munich were equally impressive, beating Bodø/Glimt 5-0.
Barcelona also scored five, defeating Feyenoord 5-1.
Manchester United returned to Champions League action with a 4-0 victory over Sabah, while Manchester City won 2-0 away at Porto.
Liverpool defeated Atlético Madrid 2-1, Real Madrid beat Inter 2-1 and Arsenal collected their three points in Naples.
The opening week therefore confirmed that the competition's biggest clubs intend to make their presence felt immediately.

69 goals and a spectacular opening
The numbers tell their own story.
69 goals were scored in 18 matches, an average of almost four goals per game.
PSG's 6-1 victory was the biggest win, followed by Bayern's 5-0, Barcelona's 5-1 and Manchester United's 4-0.
Como's 4-1 victory also belongs among the most impressive results of the round.
The new league-phase format is already producing an unusual competitive landscape.
There are 36 teams in one overall table. Each club plays eight different opponents, with four home matches and four away matches.
After the eight matchdays, the top eight qualify directly for the round of 16.
Teams finishing from ninth to 24th enter the knockout phase play-offs, while those placed 25th to 36th are eliminated.
That means every point can become important, even at this very early stage.

Champions League table after Matchday 1

The ordering of teams level on points follows UEFA's official tiebreaking criteria, beginning with goal difference and goals scored, followed by additional criteria established in the competition regulations.

The early scoring race
Ferran Torres leads the early scoring chart with three goals after his PSG hat-trick.
Ermedin Demirović also scored three times for Stuttgart.
Several players finished the opening round with two goals, including Raphinha, Erling Haaland, Serhou Guirassy and Ousmane Dembélé.
It is obviously far too early to talk about a decisive scoring race, but the first round has already highlighted a number of attacking players capable of shaping the competition.

Como are the Italian story of Matchday 1
For Italian football, Como's performance is the biggest positive of the entire opening round.
The club did not look overwhelmed by its first Champions League appearance.
It looked ready.
That distinction matters.
Winning 4-1 against Leipzig places Como fifth in the table and gives Fàbregas' team a perfect start before a difficult sequence of European fixtures.
The road ahead includes Feyenoord, Manchester United, Lens, AEK Athens, Real Betis, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona.
There will be much tougher nights.
But after what happened at the Sinigaglia, it would be a mistake to describe Como as merely a debutant enjoying the occasion.
They have already demonstrated that they can compete.
And that may be the most exciting development of Matchday 1.

What comes next?
The second matchday of the Champions League league phase will be played on October 13 and 14, 2026.
The four Italian clubs will face:
Inter vs Club Brugge — October 13
Villarreal vs Napoli — October 13
Roma vs Real Madrid — October 14
Feyenoord vs Como — October 14
The journey to Madrid is only beginning.
But after 18 matches, 69 goals and a historic Italian debut, the 2026/27 Champions League has already made one thing clear:
Como have arrived.
