For a few days, the mood around Italian football in Europe had been bleak. The previous Champions League round produced four defeats from four matches, leaving supporters to wonder whether Serie A’s representatives were struggling to keep pace with the continent’s strongest teams. Matchday three brought a very different story: four Italian clubs, four wins, and a welcome reminder that one disastrous round does not have to define an entire European campaign.
Como delivered the headline result, beating Manchester United 4-1 in a performance full of energy and attacking conviction. Roma responded with a commanding 4-0 victory over Slovan Bratislava, Napoli survived a seven-goal thriller to defeat Bodø/Glimt 4-3, and Inter edged Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0. The results were different in style, but the collective outcome was exactly what Italian football needed: points, confidence and a more encouraging picture of the league-phase race. UEFA’s official round-up highlighted Como’s statement performance and the other major results from the third matchday.

Como’s unforgettable night against Manchester United

The most striking performance came at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, where Cesc Fàbregas’s side dismantled Manchester United with a combination of technical quality, intelligent movement and relentless pressure. Como are new to this level of European competition, but they played as though the occasion belonged to them.
Nico Paz set the tone almost immediately, opening the scoring in the second minute with a superb finish. The early goal gave Como the freedom to play on the front foot, and United struggled to establish control. The visitors had opportunities to respond, yet their defensive organisation repeatedly broke down when Como accelerated through midfield.
The second half made the difference even clearer. Tasos Douvikas doubled the lead in the 49th minute after a well-timed run and a pass from Paz. Eight minutes later, Paz capitalised on a United mistake in possession and scored again. Jacobo Ramón then headed in Como’s fourth in the 76th minute, completing a sweeping move that captured the confidence of the home side. Joshua Zirkzee scored a late consolation for United, but the final 4-1 scoreline reflected a night on which Como were the sharper, more cohesive team.
Paz was the standout performer, scoring twice and setting up another goal. Yet reducing the result to one player would miss the bigger point. Como pressed aggressively, moved the ball with purpose and exploited the gaps left by a United side that looked uncomfortable under pressure. Their victory was not simply a famous name being beaten; it was a well-coached team executing a clear plan.
The result does not make Como Champions League favourites, and it would be premature to suggest that one night settles the wider debate about the club’s European ambitions. It does, however, show that Fàbregas’s team can compete at this level and punish opponents who underestimate them. For a club experiencing the Champions League for the first time, that is a significant statement.

Roma rediscover their confidence

Roma had a different kind of task. After losing a seven-goal contest against Real Madrid, the Giallorossi needed to respond without allowing frustration to become a longer-term problem. Their 4-0 victory over Slovan Bratislava provided exactly the sort of result they needed.
A four-goal win offers more than three points. It can restore confidence in the defensive structure, reward the team’s attacking work and give players a clearer sense of progress after a difficult result. Roma still have questions to answer, especially after conceding four against Real Madrid, but the response against Slovan was emphatic.
The win took Roma to four points from three matches. That is a workable position, although not one that allows much room for complacency. The league phase is long enough for a team to recover from a poor start, but the number of strong opponents means every point matters. Roma’s next challenge is to reproduce the focus they showed against Slovan when the opposition is more dangerous and the game is less comfortable.

Napoli win a thriller, but defensive questions remain

Napoli’s 4-3 win over Bodø/Glimt was perhaps the most stressful of the Italian victories. The home side finally secured its first win of the campaign after defeats against Arsenal and Villarreal, but it did so in a game that exposed both its attacking potential and its defensive vulnerabilities.
Scott McTominay played a decisive role, scoring twice as Napoli found the goals needed to take the points. Going forward, the team showed enough movement and quality to trouble the Norwegian visitors repeatedly. The problem was at the other end: conceding three goals made the closing stages far more difficult than they needed to be.
A win is a win, and Napoli can take genuine encouragement from finally getting their European campaign moving. But the scoreline should not disguise the areas that need work. In a competition where goal difference can become important, scoring four is valuable; allowing three is a warning. Napoli will need to find a better balance between attacking ambition and defensive control if they want to climb the standings.

Inter choose efficiency over spectacle

Inter’s 1-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk was less dramatic, but its importance should not be underestimated. The Nerazzurri entered the match after defeats against Real Madrid and Club Brugge. They needed a result that could stop the slide and prevent the opening weeks of the campaign from turning into a serious setback.
This time, Inter found a way to win. The match did not produce the attacking fireworks seen in Como or Naples, yet European football is not always about scoring three or four goals. Sometimes a controlled performance, a decisive moment and the ability to protect a narrow advantage are what matter most. Carlos Augusto was named UEFA’s Player of the Match, underlining his influence on the contest.
Inter still have ground to recover. One win cannot erase the problems exposed in the first two rounds, and the team will need to show greater consistency against its next opponents. But the result gives the Nerazzurri something they badly needed: a fresh starting point.

Four defeats followed by four wins: a meaningful response

The contrast between matchdays two and three could hardly be clearer. Inter had lost 4-3 to Club Brugge, Napoli were beaten 3-1 by Villarreal, Como fell 3-2 away to Feyenoord and Roma lost 4-3 to Real Madrid. Four defeats in the same round created a negative narrative around Serie A’s European level.
The following matchday did not solve every problem, but it changed the immediate picture. Como won through attacking quality, Roma delivered a clean sheet and a convincing margin, Napoli found the firepower to outscore their opponents, and Inter showed that a narrow, disciplined victory can be just as useful as a high-scoring one.
It is important not to swing from pessimism to overconfidence. A single round cannot prove that Italian football has overtaken its rivals, just as one difficult week could not establish that Serie A was falling irreversibly behind. Results are influenced by injuries, tactical match-ups, individual mistakes and the timing of difficult fixtures. The meaningful question is whether the Italian teams can now build on this response.

Where the Italian clubs stand

After three matches, Como are the best-placed Italian side in the supplied standings, sitting ninth with six points. Roma are fifteenth on four points, while Inter and Napoli each have three points. The positions illustrate how different their campaigns have been: Como have already shown they can score heavily against strong opposition, Roma are recovering from an inconsistent start, and Inter and Napoli have work to do after losing their opening two matches.
The league-phase format leaves room for movement. The top eight teams qualify directly for the round of 16, while teams ranked ninth to twenty-fourth enter the knockout play-offs. Finishing outside the top 24 means elimination. With several matchdays still to come, the table remains fluid, and a strong run can make a substantial difference.
The leading group is currently headed by Paris Saint-Germain, with Aston Villa, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Betis also on nine points in the standings provided for this article. Those teams have set a strong early pace, but the league phase is designed to reward consistency across eight matches rather than a perfect start alone.

The next test begins in November

The fourth matchday, scheduled for 3 and 4 November, will be an important measure of whether the Italian response can last. Roma travel to face Manchester United on 3 November. On 4 November, Napoli visit Porto, Como travel to Lens and Inter face Feyenoord.
Each fixture presents a different test. Como must prove that the Manchester United result was not a one-off and that their style can travel. Roma need to show they can defend with discipline against a stronger opponent. Napoli must retain their attacking threat while limiting the chances they concede. Inter will look to turn their first victory into the beginning of a more reliable run.
Those matches will say more about the Italian campaign than any celebration after matchday three. The four victories are a welcome boost, but the teams have not yet secured qualification and cannot afford to relax.

A recovery, not a final verdict

The third matchday gave Italian supporters a reason to feel optimistic again. Como produced one of the most eye-catching results of the round, Roma responded in emphatic fashion, Napoli finally got their first win and Inter stopped their losing run. Four victories from four matches were exactly the answer the country’s clubs needed after a difficult week.
The real achievement will be to turn that response into consistency. If the Italian teams can carry the same intensity and concentration into November, this round may become the moment their Champions League campaigns began to change direction. For now, the message is simple: Serie A has answered back — and the next matchday will show whether it can keep doing so.
