Personal Growth / Self Help

Personal Growth / Self Help

By gduran | gduran | 24 Jan 2020

I am truly trying to get into personal growth but I tend to be a very distrustful person, you know like I ask myself why would somebody who believes in personal growth have to try to make money off of it, I think if you are on your personal path to achieve a goal, as I would think these path leaders are, you don't really have the time to be teaching other people unless you have already achieved all your goals, in which case I would think you would be able to give your advise freely without having to get money off of it.

This of course makes me doubt about the validity of personal growth coaches or gurus or whatever. Like self help books, how can they be self help books if these books are supposed to help you? They are just regular help books, not self help. Self help is when you help yourself without anyone else having anything to do with it.

But what it comes down to is that most of these gurus and help advocates are really just out for the money, they want to sell you their books, or they want you to take their courses, or they want you to attend their seminars. I don't trust them.

Now don't get me wrong I am all for personal growth and helping yourself it is just that I tend to think that in this day and age with all the information available online you really don't have to spend money to get where you want to go, all you need is the time to do your research and take it seriously. I have found no evident way to achieve these goals and I have searched a lot and found nothing convincing, but I must say I am not the most perseverant of people.

But I do have an anecdote, one day at the company I worked for they came up with some program or other where we had to come up with a working theory on team work. I did nothing, but a good friend of mine took it to heart and did a lot of research and presented a damned good paper. Well a few months later the company hired a person from El Salvador to hold seminars all over the places where the company has offices and I had to go to one of them. Now this guy was being paid $2,000.00 for a four hour seminar (he made six of them that I know of with the company, plus of course all his expenses were paid for), the funny thing is his seminar consisted nearly 100% of what my friend had researched on the internet.

So I was more than convinced that these types of things are really scams, you can just start researching, make yourself known and go out there, use fancy words and make an easy and good living with personal growth, self help, team work or any other such. This guy who gave the seminar was a hoax and a fraud, but he sure was raking in the dollars just with a nice use of words.

Perhaps there are people who can really help you achieve all your goals but I seriously doubt it, and as I said I have done a lot of research, most of what I have found is repetitive, the same things just using different words. Well perhaps one day I will be able to reach Nirvana, I am still looking for ways to improve myself, and one of them is writing about how I am not there yet, not even close.
