Houseplant Clones

Houseplant Clones

By Lameshark | Garden | 29 May 2023

When people think about cloning, they think of a complex laboratory process for cloning large mammals, like sheep or humans. Today, we are going to look at plant clones, which is a much simpler process, but still very interesting. Most people call a plant clone a "cutting", which is usually a cut of the bottom part of a plant, including a section of the root system. Basically, you are cutting the plant into two sections and then growing them both.

Above is a houseplant that I recently cloned.

The process was very simple. I just cut the [mother] plant and then let the cutting roots sit in a cup of water for several weeks! The only other requirement is replacing the water every few days to avoid rotting. The roots might take a while to sprout, but then they start growing very rapidly and get large! Then, you just simply plant the cutting/clone into a pot and grow it normally!

Below are some cutting that I took today from my houseplant collection.
