Western mobile market is currently controlled by two operating systems - iOS from Apple and Android created by Google. And this elite club in the future would like to get another player and no one smaller than Facebook. According to The Information, its staff has been working on the development of a mobile operating system for some time, with Mark Lucovsky, a veteran from Microsoft, who co-authored the Windows NT operating system.
So far we have only little information about the whole project. Experts predict that the first device on which the OS will appear will be Oculus Virtual Reality Glasses and the Smart Portal Screen. They are currently running on a modified version of Android, and just depend on it, Facebook would like to change in the future. According to one of the company's executives, this would mean that Google would lose control of hardware and technical innovations.
In addition to the two devices mentioned above, Facebook's hardware department works on augmented reality glasses. They have the working title of Orion and it is speculated that we could wait for them in 2023. In the same year, coincidentally, AR glasses from Apple's workshop will also come out. According to the published report, in the area of hardware with its own ecosystem, Facebook would like to take a similar position in the future as Apple. However, there is a long way to go.
This is not the first time Facebook has tried to push through its own operating system. In 2013, he released the first Facebook Home phone in collaboration with HTC, but it was based on the Android core. This system has not taken much interest, and users have complained, among other things, about the constant annoyance of Facebook-related features.
