The condition of patients with covid-19 is rapidly improving after administration of the antiviral remdesivir. It results from partial results of a study by the University of Chicago, according to which almost all patients were released from the hospital within a week. Gilead, whose shares have stepped up in response to promising news in the media, has warned that it will be necessary to evaluate the end dates before reaching conclusions. A similar statement was issued by the University of Chicago itself, pointing out that internal research information was published without approval, Reuters wrote today
University of Chicago admitted 125 patients with covid-19 to the Gilead-led clinical trial program. Of these, 113 were in serious condition. All patients received daily infusion with remdesivir.
"The best news is that most of our patients have already been discharged, which is great. Only two patients have died," said Kathleen Mullane, who, as a university specialist for infectious diseases, supervised the study. In this way, Mullane commented on the video conference with other experts from the University of Chicago. The debate in which the experts evaluated the results so far was recorded and a copy of the record was placed in the media without proper approval.
The US STAT portal, which focuses on health-related news, commented to the leaked results that this is only an outline of the effectiveness of remdesivir. Similar tests are being carried out by other institutions, so it is now impossible to speak confidently about the findings of the research. Gilead has not published any research data yet. She now stated in the statement that she was still collecting research data. In the past, she said she expected the results in April.
The University of Chicago is one of the 152 facilities that are participating in the trial of remdesivir in serious patients in the Gilead program. However, the study is one-sided, as it does not involve a control group of patients who would receive placebo instead of remdesivir, a drug-free formulation.
There is no approved treatment for covid-19, which has so far been confirmed in more than two million people. Remdesivir is one promising agent. In March, President Donald Trump also praised him, saying that this antiviral drug seems to have had very good results.
