These fifty years past,
You were a faithful wife.
Never dared I dream we would last,
Now, I say we have a memorable life.
Ours was an arrangement,
Made when I was four and you, two.
There was a little payment,
Twenty years on, all went through.
I was rather apprehensive
On that big day,
While you, though pensive,
Smiled all the way.
We needn’t have felt thus,
For there was mutual attraction.
Our parents, for nothing, fussed;
Were blind to our instant passion.
I’m indeed a fortunate man,
And thank my lucky star,
For giving me your hand,
And a wonderful start.
