Fed pauses rates while inflation cools, but market fear remains. A quick macro dive into what’s next

Fed Rate Hike Off the Table, Yet Market Fear Persists

Navigating current macro conditions feels like walking a tightrope for both traditional and crypto traders. A recent report from Bank of America (Bofa) via yahoo finance highlighted that the federal reserve is almost certain to hold interest rates steady in july. Bofa pointed out that an unexpected rate hike now would be completely out of character for the Fed, especially since market pricing only reflects a tiny 10 bps adjustment. Even with a potential rate pause, Bofa stays bullish on the US dollar while anticipating a flatter Treasury yield curve.

This outlook matches broad market expectations perfectly. Looking at current Fed funds futures, the vast majority of market participants are positioning for rates to remain locked at the 350 - 375 bps range, showing a dominant 62.1% probability.

Macro Signals Pointing Toward a Pause

The case for the Fed pausing its aggressive monetary stance is heavily backed by the latest economic releases. US inflation numbers show a noticeable decline, with the recent CPI coming in at 3.5%. This is a significant drop compared to the previous 4.2% print and well below the expected 3.8% forecast, signaling that consumer price pressures are gradually unwinding.

Adding to the disinflation narrative, the labor market is clearly losing momentum. The latest on farm payrolls (NFP) report delivered a huge downside surprise, showing only 57K jobs added versus the 114K expected by Wall Street consensus. With inflation cooling down and employment growth slowing sharply, the central bank has very little reason to push rates higher.

Sentiments Check: Why Are Traders Still On Edge?

On paper, a softer Fed alongside cooling macro data usually triggers a solid rally across risk assets. Yet, current sentiment metrics show a very different story. The Crypto fear & greed index remains trapped at 29, keeping the digital asset space firmly in Fear mode. Traders seem hesitant to jump back in or build heavy positions just yet.

Equities aren't faring any better when it comes to sentiment. The CNN fear & greed index for stocks sits at 38, proving that mainstream equity investors share the exact same caution.

In my view, this widespread anxiety stems from recession fears. Traders worry that a steep decline in job creation isn't just a green light for rate pauses, but a warning sign of broader economic weakness ahead. Combined with persistent dollar strength, staying cautious in the short term seems like the smartest play.
