American director David Fincher returns to the genre he best masters, the thriller, with this film with a frenetic pace and high doses of tension. The Killer tells the story of a hitman without a name or, rather, with multiple aliases, played by Michael Fassbender. After making a huge mistake on his last mission in Paris, he has to rush out of the country to his refuge in the Dominican Republic. When he gets there he finds a situation that, although predictable, is still terrible. His partner almost died due to the action of two murderers who were after him. The failure of his Parisian mission has its consequences. From then on our killer will embark on a frantic search for the culprits, which will take him through different American cities to find them. Fassbender describes from the beginning and with voice-over his meticulous procedure when developing his work, an internal monologue that is repeated like a mantra throughout the entire film. The murderer is defined more by what he thinks than by what the character says. His precise and direct methods create a strong parallel with Fincher's way of directing, as accurate as a punch to the stomach.

The film is an adaptation of the graphic novel of the same title created by French authors Matz and Luc Jacamon. The script is signed by Andrew Kevin Walker, with whom Fincher collaborated on the magnificent Seven (1995), which marked a turning point in the American director's film career. The plot of The Assassin is very simple, a revenge plot that is treated in a minimalist way in which the greatest importance is acquired by the creation of numerous expectations that are resolved and closed clearly. The viewer witnesses the choreographed actions of the protagonist, who little by little gets rid of his enemies. In this aspect, the laconic and emotionless work that Fassbender brings to his character stands out. Very notable is the sequence he shares with Tilda Swinton, who, although she appears on screen for only a few minutes, manages to leave her personal stamp and her overwhelming presence on the film. The musical themes of the British band The Smith are omnipresent in the work, since the murderer does not listen to anything else, whether he is working or relaxing in an airplane seat. The score is the work of composers Trent Reznor (always remembered for his band Nine Inch Nails) and Atticus Ross, other frequent Fincher collaborators in films such as The Social Network (2010) or Mank (2020), and creates very pertinent atmospheres for the film. dark story that is being told to us.

The Assassin is a manual for the professional assassin with his ironclad and unbreakable work ethic that is not devoid of irrational violence but that establishes following a method as the essential condition for achieving success. This stark story of revenge and murder helps David Fincher claim to be one of the best directors of the genre, after his wonderful and personal previous work, Mank (2020) and the great series about serial killers Mindhunter (2017-2019). Netflix's commitment to genre cinema with an auteur seal has obtained more than notable results in this case.
