I've said it many times before, but the reason humans are attracted to rock-stars/entertainers is not always because they are well adjusted people. Most of us can agree that we live in some sort of sick society and sometimes we love to see someone who is not even trying to adjust to it. Courtney Love is a great example of this.
In this song "Violet" by Hole, Courtney Love exclaims "You should learn how to say no". This is a simple yet profound statement. How many of us have had to learn this lesson in life? Perhaps the stone age people among us have never had a problem saying "no", but for many of us trying to be "civilized", learning to say no can take decades to learn. I get the feeling that Courtney Love has never had a hard time saying "no", but then again, I get the feeling there is a reason she is repeating this chant in this song. Perhaps Courtney Love is just really good at making herself look tough to the world, but on the inside she is struggling just like the rest of us to say to "no" to things we know are not right?
As most people know Kurt Cobain was married to Courtney Love. I mean, I think a lot of people know that, but in today's world I'm not so sure? In my world, it is a known fact that Courtney was married to Kurt. Kurt Cobain is one of my all time favorite rock stars. When he ended up dead in 1994, I was heart broken like so many others. I'll be honest, the rumors that Courtney killed Kurt kind of ruined Courtney's music for me BUT I always had a love for her music as well. I admit now that I should have never believed the rumors about Courtney as I do not know if any of it is true.
Did Courtney kill Kurt?! The world may never know. One theory I created to justify being able to love Kurt AND Courtney BOTH, is that Kurt was miserable and ordered Courtney to kill him. This way we do not have to be eternally ashamed at Kurt for killing himself and we don't have to be eternally ashamed of Courtney for killing Kurt, because Courtney was only giving Kurt what he wanted (so many intense personalities through time have desired to burn out rather than fade away and perhaps Kurt was another one of them?)... I say this only half seriously, but it wouldn't it be the ultimate love story, in some dark and twisted way?
Anyways, this song contains many gems, such as the line "when I get what I want, I never want it again", which is the human condition in some ways. No matter what people may believe about Courtney's character, her screams in this are among the rock genre's all time greats. No wonder Kurt fell fell in love with Courtney; her screams were in the same league as his. The drums are also particularly excellent in this song. This song is great medicine for me when I'm going through Mercury retrograde times. You know when life makes you feel like you're caught in a rip tide and there is nothing you can do but surrender and let the tide take you where it wants? "Go on take everything I want you to".
I could go on and on about this song and Cortney Love, including speculation that Kurt Cobain may have written this song, BUT I'm not going to go down anymore rabbit "Hole"s. I just want to say however this work of art came into being, I really cherish it. Besides, Courtney Love seems to have wrestled her demons for the past 3 decades and currently seems to have come out the other side stronger as seen in this video. https://youtu.be/uSqVjQuDR28
This 2006 release of hers is brilliant and I do not think Kurt Cobain had anything to do with writing any of these songs? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3j7Bfr2V__s&t=1537s
I say God bless you Courtney Love. If you and Kurt did truly love each other, I hope you two can reconcile some time in some dimension, as I too know TRUE LOVE can be messier than anything I've ever experienced.
*note: I have never met Courtney Love in person and I have no desire to, as I suspect it would ruin my adoration of her. To anyone who HAS HAD to deal with Courtney Love's antics in "real life" my heart goes out to you as well, as I know some people are impossible to deal with. Being a musician for most of my life, I have at times found myself in the presence of a talented artist that I could not get along with AND it is a very perplexing feeling. Life is so crazy!!! God bless us all.
