I promise I'm not just jumping on the bandwagon with this one. I have loved Sinead O'Connor and her version of "Nothing Compares To You" since it came out in 1990. I know what it is like to lament losing someone and/or something and grieve for a long time. "Nothing Compares To You" is the perfect expression of that feeling and I have used the song as a salve many times over the years. 

I also remember when she ripped up the picture of the pope on Saturday Night Live. I think I was about 15 years old. I didn't understand the expression as much then as I do now, but I've always supported her outspoken ways. That's rock 'n' roll to me. 

I know many people feel terrible about Sinead O'Connor's death. I get that. It is very sad. I think a lot of people feel guilty, as if they should have somehow saved her. However, the way I see it, Sinead O'Connor didn't come to this world for us to save her. She came here to show us all that it is important to express yourself and be vulnerable in front of this world, even if it means making a lot of people pissed off. It is ok to cry huge tears. It is ok to show that you're angry. Jesus seemed to be a great person and look what this world did to him. I have no doubt Sinead O'Connor is doing very well on the other side, at peace with her beloved mother and son after a life of torment and pain.

I think it was/is especially important that Sinead O'Connor showed women that it's ok to show anger. I think it is a great thing for women to be able to communicate honestly to the world on how they feel.  

  Prince wrote the song "Nothing Compares To You". However, Sinead's cover of the song just goes to show that sometimes a songwriter brings the song to the world and another artist perfects it. Another example of this phenomenon is Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah". I am convinced if Jeff Buckley hadn't covered "Hallelujah" the song would have never reached the mass awareness it has today. Another example is Woody Guthrie saying "Ramblin' Jack Elliot sounds more like me than I do", meaning that Ramblin' Jack would take Woody Guthrie's songs and perfect them. Ramblin' Jack then helped Bob Dylan become what he became. If Sinead hadn't perfected Prince's song, I highly doubt most of us would've ever heard "Nothing Compares To You". 
 
Thank you Sinead O'Connor for making this feeling of longing for a lost love so tangible and helping us all go THROUGH the feelings instead of around them. RIP.
