The report suggests that trading in assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum should be regulated like gambling. The good news is that, according to tax expert Nimesh Shah, gambling income is currently not taxed in the UK.
The committee's proposal to regulate cryptocurrencies as gambling instruments aims to protect retail investors from the inherent volatility, scams, and illegal activities associated with the crypto market.
However, beyond protecting investors, such a designation could shield crypto traders from unwanted tax obligations, at least in theory. It's worth noting that the committee's report does not set policy; rather, it examines legislation and offers recommendations.

Critics argue that categorizing regulated retail crypto trading as gambling could hinder the UK's progress as a digital asset and blockchain hub. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, known for his pro-crypto stance, had previously proposed measures to position the UK as a crypto hub. However, this potential move may present a disjointed regulatory approach that could derail the country's ambitions.
