Fantom Foundation co-founder and architect Andre Cronje has been making some ambiguous declarations about the project's plans to add optimistic rollups to connect to Ethereum.
In an interview on The Scoop, Cronje said that Fantom is "actively considering and investigating" a move to integrate optimistic rollups. He said that Fantom is looking at Optimistic Stacks to see how their canonical bridges use proofs to provide a higher security guarantee.
However, Cronje also said that he doesn't think there's any such thing as a Layer 2 network. He prefers to see what's typically referred to as a Layer 2 network as a sidechain and sees the optimistic rollup technology that combines them as a bridge between the two.
This is a somewhat confusing statement, and it's not clear what Cronje's ultimate goal is with Fantom's Layer-2 plans. Is he simply trying to clarify the terminology around Layer 2 networks? Or is he suggesting that Fantom won't actually be adopting Layer-2 technology in the traditional sense?
Only time will tell what Cronje's true intentions are. But in the meantime, his ambiguous declarations are sure to fuel speculation about Fantom's future plans.
