Just DAO It with Tally Ho Wallet!

By Marcusblue | Musings About Crypto | 25 Jul 2022

Never in the history of crypto wallets did any wallet transparently challenge the other. Enter Tally Ho, the Web3 wallet owned and operated by the community. As with any Web3 wallet today, you can use Tally Ho to access dApps, trade crypto coins, track your portfolio, all from the comfort of your browser!

Tally Ho is built on the Ethereum blockchain. It is a web extension available for Chrome, Brave, or Firefox, but is currently a community preview, which means it has features that are ongoing development and are currently disabled in the wallet. The current version of the web extension is 0.14.0 with 6,000+ Chrome downloads/ users at the time of this article.

It is run by @thesis_co and run by "you" as per the Twitter slogan. Thesis is the same outfit behind the Bitcoin rewards app and card Fold (https://twitter.com/fold_app), Keep network (https://twitter.com/keep_project), tBTC Network (https://twitter.com/tbtc_project), and Saddle Finance (https://twitter.com/saddlefinance).

The pinned tweet on their official Twitter page says it all: Just DAO It! Tally Ho is governed by a DAO or Decentralized Autonomous Organization. What does that mean? The power is with the community and not with a few. Proposals that would impact the direction of Tally Ho wallet would be voted upon by the community. All profits would be received by the community as well. There would be no central authority who would decide without any user votes.

Tally Ho is also supported by recognized names in the industry, such as Lido, Compound, Curve, Uniswap, Balancer, Synthetix, and many more.

Tally Ho Setup Guide
You need to add the Tally Ho web extension to your favorite browser. I installed Tally Ho in Brave, which is also Chrome-based. It should be the same experience for all browsers, although, in Firefox, you will need to download and install an .xpi file. Go to the Tally Ho website and from there click on the browser you will use.

You can add an existing account, connect to a Ledger hardware wallet or create a new wallet. I created a new wallet to check out the features. Also, make sure you create a strong password as it appears you would not be able to change the password for now.

The wallet would open for any dApp even if you are using another wallet. If you want to disable this, do not forget to disable "Set Tally Ho as default wallet".

Then I clicked "Begin the hunt" and I am taken to my secret recovery phrase. If you created a new wallet, do not forget to store your secret recovery phrase securely! The setup was pretty fast. Done in under two minutes. What a treat, my wallet's name is a dog's name (you can change this anytime)!

Tally Ho Features
1. Send and Receive tokens
You can send and receive tokens using the wallet.

2. Support for Ethereum and Polygon
It currently only supports Ethereum and Polygon blockchain. Features that are coming soon include L2 support and support for more EVM chains.

3. Swapping of Assets
Tally Ho swap fee is only 0.5%, which is cheaper compared to Metamask' 1% swap fee.

4. Open-source
Tally Ho wallet is open source with its code available on Github so it got nothing to hide, which actually makes it secure as anyone can verify the code.

5. Security-aware
The Tally Ho wallet was developed with security in mind. Not only is it open-source, but it is also 100% self-custodial, it does not require any personal information for a signup, and it has gone through three independent audits by Open Zeppelin, Least Authority, and Code Arena. I must say, however, that the audit reports have findings in them and there is no other documentation available that says that all findings have been addressed. Maybe this is something the community can clarify as part of governance.

6. DAO-governed
Tally Ho believes that Web3 should be accessible to everyone, 100% open source, and fully owned by the community. I would say at this point, they got all three, with the last one at its forming stage. I had a peek at the governance proposal and I am happy that they established SLAs for proposals moving to a vote, e.g., the minimum proposal discussion time is within 7 days. This would ease up voter stress and prevent delays.

The DAO structure proposed would be composed of:
a. Elder Doggos: a council of 12 elected representative members,
b. Packs: high-level functional departments of the DAO in charge of the organizational structure and in facilitating the Dens.
c. Dens: these can originate from the Pack leads or proposed by Community members with various tasks and responsibilities.

What's Next?
I had a look at the roadmap and Tally Ho community is looking pretty busy in the coming weeks. On the top spot is "Delegation". Delegation is the call for volunteers from the community members who would be able to represent community members in activities, such as voting. A Delegate is an active participant in the Tally Ho DAO community.

Tally Ho has confirmed to have a governance token. They initially called it “DOGGO”. At this point, it is still all speculation, but who knows. They did confirm that the token would be launched alongside the full alpha release of Tally Ho. So, how can you be eligible for an airdrop? Use the wallet! Make swaps, and who knows, you may get $DOGGO token once they launch it.

How about NFT, you ask? Well, another upcoming feature includes an NFT gallery. I can see this marked as "In Progress" in the Roadmap. So, watch out for this!

Conclusion
Having tried it out myself, I would say Tally Ho wallet does provide a clean look and better experience. Once it launches other cool features, it would definitely give Metamask a run for its crypto! Maybe it is time for the "pack" to get a new one. Who knows, we may be at the cusp of witnessing a new "Alpha". Gone are the days of the few, the future would be owned by the community.

Hope I was able to provide some useful insights. Any other things you wanted to add? Please leave your comments. If you reached the end of this article, thank you. Please show your support with a like, comment, or tip. It would be greatly appreciated!
