When the rains ravage and winds wail I dwell about the cats I rescued that eventually decided my home wasn't the safest space for them, those that were scared off, those that just never found their way back. I think about the stray, the feral, the abused, the abandoned that are now also wet, cold, hungry, and without shelter.
A typhoon will bring us our own set of troubles for several days, but for many their lives might never be the same. Survival of the fittest often becomes survival of the fortunate and privileged and we know that only a very few actually are.
Each day the urgency to create a permanent, safe, and loving environment for my cats and the strays of El Nido grows. We're trying to establish the El Nido Cat Sanctuary - the first entity that will be performing the operations of an animal shelter in a remote rural island in a developing country where the closest vet clinic is 5 hours away.
