Binance Hack Explained: What Happened, What’s Frozen and What It Means for Bitcoin

Binance hack explained: what happened, how much is frozen, and what it means for Bitcoin and your funds.

Crypto woke up to a number nobody wanted to read: billions of dollars gone from the world’s biggest exchange in minutes. Some of it is frozen. Some of it is still unaccounted for. And almost every headline gives a different total. This guide separates what is confirmed from what is still guesswork.

What Happened in the Binance Hack?

On the evening of 29 October 2026, on-chain trackers saw huge transfers leave Binance hot wallets, which are the internet-connected wallets exchanges use for day-to-day withdrawals. Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao said it looked like a hack. Binance then suspended withdrawals on multiple networks, later extending this to all deposits and withdrawals while its security teams investigate.

Timeline of the Night (UTC)

•  21:15: Zhao says on X that user funds are safe but that the activity looks like a hack.

•  22:15: Binance pauses withdrawals.

•  23:06: Binance Alpha trading is paused.

•  00:04 (30 Oct): Binance co-CEO Yi He says Binance will cover all hacking losses.

•  00:52: Binance says the verified total of frozen funds is around $3 billion.

How Much Was Taken?

Nobody can give one clean number yet. Estimates range from about $3.3 billion leaving hot wallets on Ethereum to more than $5.7 billion across several chains, according to Arkham data reported by CoinDesk. The differences come from what each tracker counts: one chain or many, and which tokens.

What Caused It?

This is not confirmed. Security researchers have floated two ideas: abuse of an Ethereum wallet-delegation feature, and misuse of private keys rather than classic theft. Treat both as theories until Binance publishes its post-mortem.

What Has Been Frozen?

Speed is the one good-news story here. Stablecoin issuers and other projects moved fast:

•  Tether: more than $1.5 billion in USDT

•  Circle: more than $800 million in USDC

•  Ripple, World Liberty Financial and Arbitrum’s Security Council: smaller freezes totalling a few hundred million dollars

Binance puts the verified total frozen at around $3 billion. One caveat matters: frozen is not the same as returned. Recovery usually runs through issuer or court processes that can take weeks.

How Did the Market React?

Aave also froze markets across its deployments as a precaution, and a separate third-party breach at Polymarket was announced the same day. Another large exchange publicly denied rumours that it was affected too, saying its systems are running normally.

Are User Funds Safe?

Binance says user funds are safe and that it will cover every dollar lost. That promise is worth taking seriously, but read it carefully.

Does the Frozen Amount Cover the Loss?

It depends on which loss figure turns out to be right. If the loss is about $3.3 billion, the roughly $2.5–$3 billion frozen covers most of it. If the real number is closer to $5.5 billion, frozen funds would cover under half. That gap is what Binance would need to fill from its own resources, and it is the number to watch.

When Will Withdrawals Reopen?

Binance has not given a date. It says it will resume as soon as the security issue is resolved.

What Should You Do Right Now?

This is general safety guidance, not financial advice.

•  Use official channels only. Updates come from Binance’s verified accounts and announcement page.

•  Ignore links in DMs, replies and ads. Scammers move first on nights like this.

•  Never share seed phrases, 2FA codes or login details. No support team will ask.

•  Don’t rush funds through unknown bridges or “recovery” services.

•  Cut leverage. Moves like this liquidated over $600 million in about an hour.

What Bitcoin Traders Should Watch Next

The market is reacting to uncertainty, not just to the loss. Three things will decide the next move:

1. Binance’s next statement, especially on withdrawals and the final loss figure.

2. The frozen total vs the loss total. The smaller the gap, the calmer the market.

3. Price levels. $80K is the line to reclaim, and the recent low near $77.7K is the line to defend.

If BTC reclaims $80K on calm volume, the panic leg may be over. If $77.7K breaks on a close, another flush is likely before a base forms. These are scenarios, not predictions.

FAQ's

Is Binance still working?

Deposits and withdrawals are suspended, and Binance Alpha trading was paused. Check Binance’s official channels for the current status.

Will Binance reimburse users?

Binance says it will cover all hacking losses. Details on timing have not been published.

Why did Bitcoin fall?

Uncertainty about the world’s largest exchange triggered forced selling and heavy liquidations. Bitcoin dropped about 3% from the $80K area.

Is this the largest crypto hack ever?

If the higher estimates hold, yes. A security CEO told CoinDesk it is the biggest crypto hack in history. For comparison, the Bybit theft in February 2025 was about $1.5 billion.

The Bottom Line

Treat today’s numbers as a moving target. Wait for the post-mortem, keep your leverage low, and don’t trust any claim that comes without a source. The next 24–48 hours will say more about this event than the first night’s headlines did.
