What happens after the PSLE? At Yishun Primary School, learning continues for our Eco-stewards — outside the classroom!
In line with the SustainAble ALP helmed by the Science department, our Primary 6 Eco-stewards were given the opportunity to pilot two composting methods - black soldier fly (BSF) larvae and eco-enzymes. First, they collected leftover food and fed them to BSF larvae. In addition, they deposited food waste into a composting bin and layered it with cocopeat (derived from coconut husks).
Applying both methods at the same time enabled our students to sharpen their observation skills and make insightful comparisons - competencies they could use to thrive in the future. They even got to interact with a group of Johor educators who came specifically to observe them in action. Most importantly, they were glad to help transform food waste into fertiliser, which goes to show that no Yishunite is too young to make a difference to the environment!
