I’m in the midst of editing School Graduation Certificates for my colleagues. So, I thought it would be a good thing for me to jot down some observations here so that I can forward them to them later. I can also get future colleagues to refer to this article as a writing reference. Here goes:
1. Write the student’s full name in the first line of the school graduation certificate
Heng Kai Le was a teacher of NorthLight School from January 2014 to December 2018.
2. List the student’s positive attributes before his/her experiences.
- She demonstrated her kind and considerate nature by participating in various community service projects.
This is to help the reader promptly grasp the kind of person our student is.
3. Write in simple language
Instead of writing “X is a remarkable young man who exudes a rejuvenating sense of purpose in all his endeavours. His resolute determination and unwavering dedication showcase his self-assurance, laying the foundation for even greater accomplishments in the future”
Write “X is a polite young man who gets along well with others. With his determination and self-assured nature, he is capable of doing well in the workplace.”
Instead of writing “Despite the adversities he faced, X exhibits unwavering perseverance and a steadfast commitment to maintaining a positive outlook.”
Write, “Though he may have faced various obstacles, he took them in his stride and committed himself to overcoming them while maintaining a positive outlook.”
Adding adjectives (unwavering) to abstract nouns (perseverance) enlivens the writing and makes it sound more academic. On the other hand, too many abstract nouns bolstered by adjectives may slow down the readers’ pace and hinder their understanding of the student’s character.
4. Use different vocabulary to write about similar attributes in students
For high-ability performers: X displayed a profound interest in the field of Blockchain Technology, demonstrating an enthusiasm for learning in all her subjects.
For ordinary performers: X displayed an interest in the field of Blockchain Technology, demonstrating a willingness to learn in all his subjects.
