Teaching the -less suffix

Teaching the -less suffix

We all know that the -less suffix means without. I taught Secondary Two teenagers this suffix this term. Based on the insights I have gained, this is what I would have done differently if given the chance to teach it again.

I would first focus on concrete entities. It is easy for students to visualise the absence of drivers and cash from these two pictures:

Similarly, touch is an intangible object, but it is easy for them to understand what it means not to have to touch something.

Next, I will touch on technology. Due to technological advancements, convenience has been brought about as a result of us not having to deal with something. Examples include rimless and cordless.

And of course, how can we forget about wireless?

After we wrap our heads adequately around -less, we could pour in the fun by attaching another suffix, such as -ly. Wirelessly is featured again.

Alternatively, I could extend their understanding by bringing in collocations. Check out timeless classic and seamless journey.

I like helping students make better sense of the world they are living in.
