Singapore is known to have one of the best-performing educational systems in the world. So, it is understandable that we live in a pressure cooker as we hope for our children to stand out from their competitors and excel in their studies. Fortunately, I’m not that caught up in the academic arms race yet. I don’t think I will ever be, frankly, even if I am a teacher myself. My son received a long-awaited birthday parcel from Japan. It boosted a panda Minecraft Lego set. 93010 Did you know his first response upon seeing his sister? He thrust out the Lego box and suggested to her, “Let’s share!” Awfully difficult for a preschooler to be generous with his newly acquired possessions, but he somehow has a big heart. He is enough. I don’t need him to top his class in future. Anyway, the idea of being top is arbitrary. By whose standards? Why should we care about those standards? He is kind. It is most important to be kind.
