1) Linking ants and orchids enabled students to understand how the former might play a part in pollination. Making the orchid bookmarks also enabled young minds to grasp the following big idea: Although ants are not considered true pollinators, they do help flowers to reproduce, along with bees and butterflies.
2) Allowing pupils to create their orchid bookmark at the PTC lab enabled them to feel like scientists. It was a good gateway for them to be exposed to the intriguing world of Science.
Improve
Need to inform P1 teachers to get their charges to prepare glue sticks to glue the orchid petals.
Start
Currently, our slides dwell on the story behind hybridisation of Vanda Miss Joaquim (https://www.nlb.gov.sg/main/article-detail?cmsuuid=a6d4c4a7-18ac-4b8f-a07f-7790d501b8a5), which is a commendable initiative. To not rest on our laurels, we could promote awareness of these places and organisations (National Orchid Garden, The Orchid Society of South East Asia (https://www.facebook.com/ossea.sg) so that students could learn more about our national flowers on their own / with their families. Compile a list of useful reading material, including "Agnes and Her Amazing Orchid".
Stop
Remove the slides on making pressed orchids since the vendor has already pressed the orchids for the pupils.
