Earlier this year, you chose to sign up for the English Department's lessons on sign language, not quite knowing what to expect.   Armed with a curious mind, you studied one S.A.I.L lesson every month, trying to learn various signs to the best of your ability. Well done! We are proud of your willingness to challenge yourself.   You have come a long way since then because you have learnt how to:  

• sign the alphabet in American Sign Language (ASL)
• do a simple self-introduction by signing "Hello, how are you? My name is ________________."
• use Singapore Sign Language (SgSL) to sign the chorus of "Home"

Let's reflect on your growth and progress!   Before taking this S.A.I.L course, what was your impression of sign language? How has your impression changed after undertaking three lessons so far? Let's use the following Interactive Thinking Tool (I used to think that sign language...Now, I think that sign language...)

Self-introduction   "Hello, how are you? My name is ________________."   Since this is the finale lesson, let's revise how to do the self-introduction so that you can remember the signs for life. For our last lesson, we will focus on a topic close to our hearts - NorthLight School.   

NorthLight School is like a second home to you because you spend a lot of time in school with your teachers and friends.  

You experience the ups and downs of secondary school life together. You make wonderful memories since you experience many interesting programmes that are not found in other schools.    Wouldn't it be great to learn how to sign the chorus of our school song?  

Just think about it! If you know how to sign this, you can show it off to your friends and family during daily interactions. Later on in life, you may get to sign it during orientation camps or job interviews when people ask you to share about one thing you have learnt at NorthLight School.

Today, your teachers would like you to learn how to sign the chorus of our school song. No one has used "NorthLight School Song" for a song signing performance before, so there will be no sample video for you to refer to. Nevertheless, we hope that you are up for the challenge because we want you to come up with your original interpretations of how the chorus should be signed. Since you are a pioneer, you can decide which signs to leave out in your performance.

Do you remember how you learnt to sign the chorus of "Home" by focusing on one line at a time? Let's use this strategy again.  

Your teachers have complied some useful signs that you may want to use for your song signing video. However, since different people often choose to sign the same song differently, you may decide on the words that you wish to emphasise for your performance. Surely, this will help you express your emotions better.

In the event that the sign for a word you want to sign is not found here, you may wish to do research on websites like The HandSpeak® site and Baby Sign Language and find signs that you want to incorporate into your performance.   You have accomplished so much today!
