Designing my gamified online lesson

In Singapore, we have an online learning management system called the Student Learning Space (SLS). Due to our emphasis on education, the kind developers have even conceptualized gamification templates so that teachers like me can enthuse our students about learning by coming up with missions and quests. It's like the learning is the fun incidental by-product of their engagement on SLS.

So today, I wanted to design a lesson centered on the metaverse because I felt this sense of responsibility to educate my students about this emerging trend. I first designed the cover page of my online lesson.

First, I explained the meaning of the metaverse.

What is the metaverse? The metaverse is an online space where you can explore and engage with digital content and other users in real-time. Roblox, Minecraft and Fortnite are examples of metaverses. Then, I explained what it means to sell things on the metaverse. How do you sell things on the metaverse? You may have played Roblox and Fortnite and bought special tools and accessories before. In these metaverses, people can create and sell these virtual items to other gamers who want them. Similarly, selling things on the metaverse is like having a virtual store where you can showcase and trade your digital goods. When other people like your products, they can use real or virtual money to buy these items, just like in a real store. Therefore, selling things on the metaverse allows you to hone your entrepreneurial skills! After unpacking the meaning of selling things on the metaverse, I introduced the scenario as such: Background

You are excited about setting up a business on the metaverse. Recently, you discovered that local fashion brand, Charles & Keith, has established a presence on the metaverse. You are keen to follow in its footsteps. This is because you love fashion, design, and writing. Hence, you believe that establishing an online fashion store would help you combine all these interests.

In addition, establishing your own fashion store on the metaverse provides the following advantages:

1. enable you to create your business venture without having to pay for rental space.

2. allow you to reach a broader audience beyond your friends and teachers.

Let's Get Started! You are eager to set up a fashion store in the metaverse. However, you must first successfully complete a series of spelling challenges. These challenges will test your spelling skills and ensure that you can effectively communicate and present your virtual store to customers from all over the world. Once you successfully conquer these spelling challenges, you will be deemed qualified and ready to embark on your fashion store venture in the metaverse. Task #1: Knowing how to Spell Words Singaporeans Often Misspell Let's explore the words Singaporeans commonly misspell, so you can avoid making similar mistakes when launching your virtual fashion store. Grab a pen and paper and take note of the correct spelling! After months of practice, Jenny was successfull in mastering her favourite dance routine. What is the correct spelling of "successfull"? The comedian's humourous jokes had the entire audience laughing uncontrollably. What is the correct spelling of "humourous"? Tom was truely amazed by the stunning sunset at the beach. What is the correct spelling of "truely"? Emily showed off her new posesion, a shiny bicycle, as she rode around the neighborhood. What is the correct spelling of "posesion"? To help her study more effectively, Sophia decided to seperate her study materials into different folders. What is the correct spelling of "seperate"?

Task #2: Learning the Differences Between British English and American English

Now that you learn the common spelling of various words that Singaporeans misspell, let's learn about the varieties of English in the world. In order to communicate effectively with people from around the world, it's important to have a working knowledge of more prominent varieties of English. Two such varieties that come to mind are British English and American English.

Did you know that words are often spelled differently in British English than in American English? To help illustrate these differences, here's a table that shows the British and American spellings of some commonly used words:

Here are some principles that explain the differences in spelling between British English and American English.

Both British and American spellings of a word will be accepted in Singapore. However, British spelling is more commonly used in Singapore, not least because we take our English examinations that are offered jointly by Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) in the United Kingdom and the Singapore Ministry of Education.

In order to successfully complete Challenge #2, you must accurately identify whether each word corresponds to British spelling or American spelling for all 10 questions. Paying attention to spelling differences will be crucial in navigating through this quiz and emerging victorious.

Challenge #3: Learning the Drop the 'e' Spelling Rule

After learning how to spell accurately commonly misspelt words by Singaporeans and identifying the differences between British English and American English, you are now ready to write a description of your online store.

You will first need to master the drop the 'e' spelling rule. What is the drop the 'e' spelling rule?

We usually drop the 'e' at the end of words when adding an ending that begins with a vowel: -ing, -ed, -er, -able, -ous, -ible, ious.

write + ing = writing, hope + ed = hoped, excite + able = excitable
