Ace Your Child’s PSLE

Impetus
My son has too many toys. But he loves collecting animals of all shapes and sizes - and isn’t likely to change his attitude anytime soon. Which goes to show that you can bring someone into this world but are helpless to control his actions!

My brainwave
If I can’t change him, I have to adapt. So I thought about digging up the PSLE Science notes on adaptations and extracting the key information related to zebras. After that, I can throw those notes away to support SGRecycle.

PSLE Science
I know you parents out there are anxious to know how you can help your child survive the monstrosity that is PSLE. Well, for adaptations, they have to learn two kinds: structural and behavioural.

Structural adaptations of zebras
1. Zebras have stripes to protect them from predators like big cats. When a lioness looks at a herd of zebras, she sees a wall of stripes. When she attacks, the zebras bolt. For a split second, the lioness would be confused by the moving stripes and doesn’t know which animal to chase. This delay gives zebras a chance to get away.
2. Also, zebras have stripes to protect them from the bite of the tsetse fly. This fly carries a very dangerous disease called sleeping sickness. The fly’s compound eyes prevent it from seeing a zebra’s stripes clearly. The zebra is then almost invisible to the fly and thus gets bitten by it less often than other savannah mammals which are easier to find.

Behavioural adaptations of zebras
1. Zebras live in families of about fifteen led by a male, the stallion. The rest of the group consists of mares with their foals. Herding allows them to scan for predators more effectively, with individuals taking turns to stand guard while others graze.

Bonus: teach your child alliteration through “zany zebra”.
