I'm sure "Squid Game" requires no introduction as this Korean drama about how 456 people who are in dire financial straits are recruited to participate in a do-or-die game is set to become Netflix's most successful show ever. But this essay is not about why Squid Game is a runaway success because there are plenty of articles on the Internet that have already covered this ground. What I do wish to reflect in this musing here is how I will intend to apply 3 takeaways I have gained from watching this phenomenal show into my writing here on Publish0x.
Fret not, if you have not finished watching Squid Game yet. I will cover the happenings of the show in the vaguest of terms possible so that I will not reveal any spoilers!
1) Focus On Interesting Characterisation
As the popular saying goes, everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle, so it's important that you remain kind to others. The characters in Squid Game are all driven to play this deadly and violent game because of their personal struggles. They see no way out of their predicament and are thus willing to stake even their lives in this endeavour. I am thankfully not as troubled as these characters but I think revealing more about the obstacles I'm facing as well as my coping mechanisms may go a long way towards fleshing out my articles here.
Of course, I realise that there is a fine line between being vulnerable and being needy. So I aim to be authentic without (knowingly or unknowingly) resorting to emotional manipulation to get a few more tips. Coming across is weak is okay in my book, but ultimately, my revelations should serve to enhance your perspective of life.
2) Focus On Universal Themes
As a language teacher, I always tell my students that while I cannot predict the topic that will come out for their examination, feelings are universal and ought to be given due emphasis in their writing. Similarly, what makes Squid Game so compelling is the humanity that still pervades the bleakness of the universe the characters find themselves in. No doubt, the ugly side of human nature is manifested way too disturbingly but there are characters who make genuine connections, trust each other and even sacrifice their lives so that they can help others succeed in the game. Such themes like brotherhood, redemption and salvation keep my attention riveted on the show. Now, how can I elevate my writing so that it will tease your minds and tug at your heartstrings? Back to the drawing board!
3) Focus On Visuals
I'm sure you will agree with me that the cinematography on Squid Game is just stunning, with many a scene made to capture the eyeballs of modern-day audiences bred on a diet of colourful Instagram pictures. The scenes on Squid Game are bright and colourful, which lend a certain energy and dynamism to the stories. I should really get off my inertia and strive to design my own thumbnail pictures and other visuals on Canva!
