#1: Making Money out of Recycling

By cryotosensei | diaperfinancingfund | 26 Dec 2023

Welcome to the 1st post of Cryptosensei Chronicles, where Kai Le Sensei reveals all his unique, unorthodox ways of making money. Today’s post will be centered on SGRecycle.

Be proud of your money philosophy

First things first, it’s important to be unapologetically self-aware of how you think about money. I have friends who dabble in options or forex trading, but frankly, I’m not keen to spend time to learn them because scrutinising charts will bore the hell out of me.

I love to create money out of nothing, so I relentlessly go down this path.

Have a compelling Why

SGRecycle pays me 5 cents for every kilogram of paper and cardboard that I donate. Moreover, I can only withdraw my earnings whenever I accumulate $10. But I have long decided that all proceeds from this endeavour will go straight to my son’s Child Development Account. You can bet that I’m super motivated.

There’s no denying the psychological dividends. Sometimes , I take my son along when I recycle the materials. It makes me feel good that I’m introducing him to this sustainable habit as well as reducing my burden on the environment.

Automate my process

  1. Download the SGRecycle app to check the extent to which the recycling bin is filled. I have been to 4 out of 5 such bins in Yishun - it makes for a leisurely stroll.
  2. Make my workplace a source of inputs. I have a bag in which I dump all my waste papers. My students and colleagues know that I’m into recycling as I routinely collect their waste papers. In fact, when my Co-Form Teacher was packing up to leave my school, I dropped my bag in front of him and implored him to give me all his papers.
  3. Alter my lifestyle. Back when I was happily childless, my worktable used to be super disorganised. It’s something I actually took pride it because I felt that a tidy table = devoid of personality and a messy table flourished creative chaos. No more of such nonsensical thoughts these days! Now, I declutter my table whenever I can. I actually more or less know where all my documents are. (Horrified gasp.) Also, every book that I finish reading gets donated to SGRecycle. That’s why I read. A lot.

That’s it. That’s how I earn money with fierce intentionality.

Incidentally, Nee Soon Town Council has textile recycling bins, in which I can donate my preloved clothes. No, they don’t pay for the donations, but I just wanna say that Yishun is much more than the “most dangerous town in Singapore”.

This post is also posted on diaperfinancingfund.blogspot.com in hopes that I can withdraw $150 from Google Adsense in my lifetime.
