At dawn on Saturday the Anak Krakatoa volcano erupted on the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra. The son of the legendary Krakatoa raised a plume of smoke up to 500 meters high and has generated great fear in the world community of scientists.

Anak Krakatau. The name in the local language means son of Krakatoa , the volcano that caused the monumental eruption in 1883 and triggered a period of global cooling throughout the planet.
The blast was heard 600 kilometers away and ejected lava, stones and ash at a height of 21,000 meters. The following morning, three other strong explosions were recorded, causing several tsunamis with waves almost 40 meters high. An estimated 36,417 people died.

Krakatoa disappeared under the sea after the disaster, but after decades of underwater eruptions Anak Krakatoa (son of Krakatoa) emerged from the waters in 1927, showing activity in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 and 2018, which was the last time The volcano was active when the eruption caused a tsunami that killed 400 people.

The activity is, at the moment, small compared to the previous ones, there have been no victims or material damage, according to the Center for Volcanology and Mitigation of Geological Disasters (PVMBG).

It should be noted that Indonesia is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of ​​great seismic and volcanic activity. The island is shaken every year by some 7,000 tremors, most of them moderate.
