FILE #016: GASLIGHTING — "THE THEFT OF REALITY" Simple Definition:

PINTEREST

Imagine you are looking directly at a red car. But the person standing next to you constantly insists: "No, it's black, you're mistaken." No matter how confidently you state it's red, they say it with such absolute conviction that you eventually start thinking, "Maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me, maybe they're right."
Gaslighting is a form of psychological pressure where a manipulator forces you to abandon your own reality and accept their fabricated lies. It makes you constantly question your own memory, perception, and sanity.

Real-Life Example:
At home, a husband insists he told his wife where he put the money yesterday, claiming she simply forgot. The wife clearly remembers: her husband never said a word about it. But the husband keeps repeating: "You're too emotional, you're starting to forget everything, you must have something wrong with you." A few weeks later, the wife genuinely panics, thinking, "Am I really losing my memory?", leading her to rely entirely on her husband and become completely dependent on him.

How to Spot It (3 "Red Flags"):
"You're being too...": The manipulator constantly labels you as "too sensitive," "too dramatic," or "too paranoid." The goal is to make you completely distrust your own emotional responses.
Denying Reality: When it comes to events, agreements, or exact words you remember vividly, they stubbornly claim, "I never said that," or "You're making things up in your head."
Flipped Logic: Their words and actions constantly contradict each other, but every time you bring it up, they turn the blame back onto you and twist the situation around.

Consequences:
When gaslighting continues over a long period, the victim completely loses their sense of self. They turn into someone afraid to voice an opinion, constantly doubting themselves with "Amike I wrong?", and suffering from completely shattered self-confidence. This condition frequently leads to severe depression and anxiety disorders.

Defense (3 Practical Tips):
Write Down the Truth: If your relationship involves constant gaslighting like "That never happened" or "You're imagining things," keep a written journal of important events or save messages. This acts as your personal "reality map."

Stop Arguing: Don't waste energy trying to prove the truth to a manipulator. Their goal isn't to reach an agreement; it's to make you second-guess yourself. End the conversation by calmly saying, "If that's what you think, that's your opinion, but I know exactly what happened."
Seek an Outside Perspective: Explain the situation to a trusted, neutral friend or outsider. An objective person can evaluate the situation impartially and confirm that you aren't going crazy—you are simply the victim of manipulation.
