ARCHIVE №044: MANIPULATION THROUGH BRAIN SURGERY (THE CRIMES OF LOBOTOMY)

Is it possible to completely erase a person's willpower, character, emotions, and capacity for resistance in a single instant? You don't need psychological pressure or long-term manipulation to achieve this. In the history of medicine and criminalistics, there is a dark page where doctors, using surgical instruments in their hands, turned living, thinking human beings into obedient, spineless puppets in a matter of minutes. This horrifying procedure is called Lobotomy.

In the 1940s and 1950s across the globe, especially in the US, lobotomy was legally promoted as the most effective method to cure mental illness, aggression, and even "troublesome" individuals who refused to submit to societal norms. Walter Freeman, the doctor who popularized this technique, even regarded it as a monumental medical breakthrough.

The essence of the operation was horrifyingly simple and brutal. The doctor would insert a specialized blade, resembling an ice pick, through the patient's eye socket directly into the brain. Without any sophisticated neurosurgical equipment, using merely a hammer, he would sever the connections of the prefrontal cortex—the region responsible for thinking, decision-making, and personality formation—from the rest of the brain.

The results were terrifying. Patients emerging from surgery no longer screamed or showed aggression; they became utterly docile. But along with their distress, their identity, character, memories, and human willpower died completely. What was performed under the umbrella of medical practice was, in reality, the crime of murdering a human personality alive. Most tragically, many manipulators and families voluntarily handed over their rebellious loved ones—primarily women and defiant youths who held independent minds—to doctors simply to quiet them down and force complete submission.

One of the most infamous tragedies in medical archives is the story of Rosemary Kennedy, the slightly volatile sister of US President John F. Kennedy. To tame her character and prevent any damage to the family's public reputation, her father secretly subjected the 23-year-old girl to a lobotomy. Following the operation, Rosemary lost her ability to speak and walk independently, living out the rest of her days as an emotionless puppet with the mental capacity of a two-year-old child.

Later, neurology and forensic medical examination condemned this procedure as a severe crime and an absolute violation of human rights, banning it worldwide. This was not digital or psychological captivity; it was the archiving of the human soul at the neuronal level using a steel blade.
Question: In your opinion, is there any legal or moral justification for "subduing" a person's character and willpower through medical means? Isn't it far better to live freely with raw emotions than to exist as an obedient, emotionless robot?
