3 Ninjas and the Power of Nostalgia

Hello friends and all gamers, especially those who love retro games. Many games mark our lives, and even though they are not considered good games or fail in very simple mechanics, they can represent great treasures for us because of all the time we dedicated to them in our childhood or simply because of the nostalgia for past times. This was the case with 3 Ninjas Kick Back. I remembered the game with great affection and decided to replay it, but I found some surprises I didn't expect.

3 Ninjas Kick Back is a beat 'em up and platform game. I played it on its SNES version, in a time when choosing games was very difficult, and when you got one, it felt like a duty to play it to the end.

The game is based on the movie of the same name, and although I remember watching the movie when I was a child and enjoying it, the plot seems somewhat vague and simplistic to me, perhaps because of the time or because it was a well-exploited theme during that era.

It tells the story of how a retired old samurai does everything possible to find a magical dagger that was stolen during a tournament, placing his hope in his three grandchildren to recover it, having to travel to Japan and face hundreds of dangers.

During the game, we will fight various enemies, from bats, statues, and ninjas. For this, we can choose between the three protagonists, each with their own peculiarities, abilities, and weapons. We will also be able to get power-ups that will make the game easier or lose all our lives trying to reach them.

When I decided to replay the game, I felt a bit disappointed. Although the semi-realistic pixel art style of the game doesn't completely displease me, I think it falls far short compared to other SNES titles. The music saves this game, being quite good and entertaining. On the other hand, I found the game controls extremely complicated and poorly executed, and the hitboxes of the enemies and objects leave much to be desired.

I remember that the two-player functionality was very fun, but this time I had no one to play with, so I decided to play it alone. The first stages were quite simple and fun, although it gets complicated later, especially due to the deficiency of the jump, which fails to reach many platforms. Some of the simplest movements of our character can be very clumsy and uncontrollable.

Despite all these deficiencies and the almost disappointment of not being what I remembered, I spent about three hours playing it and challenging myself to progress, so I did end up having fun. As for recommending it, I'm not very sure. It is a sincerely mediocre game, and I think many current players would abandon it due to these difficulties and the repetitive nature of the formula and levels, but someone who played it in its time or during their childhood will surely have a good time fighting ninjas and opening treasure chests. Without a doubt, it is a game for the nostalgic.
