The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has released a board paper titled "Elements of Effective Policies for Crypto Assets" that outlines a framework of nine policy actions that member countries can take to develop a comprehensive, coordinated, and consistent policy response to crypto assets.
The nine elements include "safeguarding monetary sovereignty and stability" and "establishing a joint monitoring framework across different domestic agencies and authorities". The IMF aims to "strengthen global cooperation to develop digital infrastructures and alternative solutions for cross-border payments and finance." In practice, it means preventing nations from legalising crypto as money, making it harder for humans to crypto and promote CBDCs (central bank digital currencies).
Since I have written about discussions regarding cryptocurrencies and international financial institutions, the case is that the IMF is not entirely anti-crypto but is still against recognizing crypto as money or legal tender. Cryptocurrency and blockchain technology represent a major shift in how we think about money and financial systems. Cryptocurrencies offer a decentralized, transparent alternative to traditional currencies that are not controlled by any central authority, which is a significant departure from the existing financial system.
The recent paper by the IMF is just one more example of how national governments and international financial institutions are doing everything they can to make crypto less popular and harder to use and prevent humans from having access to global markets.
